JOB SUMMARY

As a Municipal Court Bailiff, you play a crucial role in maintaining order and ensuring the smooth functioning of court proceedings within municipal jurisdictions. You are responsible for providing security, managing courtroom decorum, and assisting judges, court personnel, and the public as needed. This position is supervised by the Captain or his/her designee. This is a sworn position with law enforcement arrest powers. This is a part-time, sworn position. Must be Georgia P.O.S.T. certified.

MAJOR DUTIES
•Courtroom Security:
-Maintain a secure and orderly environment within the courtroom.
-Screen individuals entering the courtroom for prohibited items.
-Respond promptly and appropriately to any disturbances or security breaches.
-Take Law Enforcement Action when the situation calls for it.
-Ensure the safety of judges, court staff, attorneys, and members of the public during court proceedings.

•Enforce Court Orders:
-Execute court orders, including warrants, subpoenas, and summonses, as directed by the judge.
-Detain individuals as necessary for contempt of court or other violations.
-Escort prisoners to and from the courtroom and ensure their proper handling and detention.

•Assist Judges and Court Personnel:
-Assist judges with various tasks, such as distributing documents, organizing exhibits, and maintaining order during trials.
-Coordinate with court clerks to manage paperwork, filings, and documentation related to court cases.
-Provide support to court personnel and attorneys as required, including helping with logistical arrangements and facilitating communication.

•Provide Information and Assistance:
-Interact with members of the public and provide information regarding court procedures, schedules, and basic legal matters.
-Assist individuals with disabilities or special needs to ensure their full access to court facilities and services.
-Direct visitors to appropriate offices or resources within the courthouse.

•Maintain Equipment and Facilities:
-Ensure that security equipment, such as metal detectors and surveillance cameras, are in good working condition.
-Report any maintenance or repair needs for court facilities and equipment.
-Assist in setting up and arranging courtroom furniture, equipment, and other materials as needed for hearings and trials.

•Collaborate with Law Enforcement:
-Coordinate with local law enforcement agencies to address security concerns and respond to emergencies.
-Communicate effectively with police officers, sheriff's deputies, and other law enforcement personnel to ensure seamless coordination of security efforts.

•Perform related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

•Knowledge of law enforcement administration.
•Knowledge of civil and criminal processes.
•Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local guidelines.
•Knowledge of city streets and geography.
•Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
•Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
•Skills in the use of firearms and restraint equipment.
•Skills in operating emergency vehicles.
•Skills in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
•Skills in oral and written communication.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Captain or his/her designee assigns work in terms of general instructions. The Captain will spot-check completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Administrative Assistant, Police

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include GCIC and NCIC rules and regulations, the Georgia Traffic Code, Port Wentworth City Ordinances, bond procedures, Police Department Policy, and Port Wentworth Human Resources handbook. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of varied administrative duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to manage the day-to-day operations of the Court Department and the office of Professional Standards. The position will assist with the administrative functions of the Court Department. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Office of Professional Standards and Court Department operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and climbs ladders.
The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no supervisory control.
