Head Start Assistant Teacher

Watertown, South Dakota

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Take on the role of Teacher in their absence.
  2. Discuss assigned teaching area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts and implementing curriculum with fidelity.
  3. Assist in preparing lesson plans in assigned area and submit to teacher for review.
  4. Promote sound social and emotional growth and development through recognizing individual differences and cultural patterns.
  5. Set up and arrange the classroom so daily lesson plan requirements are met.
  6. Interact with children utilizing a variety of methods and techniques such as play activities, discussion, and supervised role-playing.
  7. Assist all children, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  8. Cooperate with center staff in providing services for children with disabilities.
  9. Assist in recording children's weight and height as deemed necessary.
  10. Assist in tracking In-kind.
  11. Accompany teachers on Initial Home Visits and others as deemed necessary.
  12. Encourage parents to become involved in the classroom.
  13. Encourage and promote the families' achievement of self-sufficiency.
  14. Ensure the health and safety verification checklist is completed daily.
  15. Submit biweekly time sheets to the immediate supervisor.
  16. Assist the Nutrition staff as deemed necessary.
  17. Maintain family and child confidentiality at all times.
  18. Use active supervision strategies to monitor classrooms.
  19. Report daily child observations to the Teacher.
  20. Attend meetings, trainings, and seminars as deemed appropriate and necessary by ICAP.
  21. Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
  22. Perform other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Education and Experience

  1. Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Required
  2. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in an accredited program in Early Childhood Education or a degree in a related field preferred.
  3. One (1) year experience and/or training working with children, preferably with preschool age children or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

  1. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  2. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  3. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

  1. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Other Work Related Abilities

  1. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
  2. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  3. Ability to work well with staff, public and families.
  4. Ability to be punctual and organized.
  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
