Los Angeles, United States Movement Innovation Collaborative Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

We are searching for a dynamic and committed Finance Director to drive our mission forward and navigate the exciting challenges of a startup environment.

About Us:

The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is a new entity that will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California's grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. The Movement Innovation Collaborative will support changemakers and organizations to catalyze innovations in movement strategy and power building, intergenerational leadership development, and our collective long-term sustainability and resiliency. Through a network of physical and virtual "centers," the Movement Innovation Collaborative will also contribute a key piece of infrastructure needed to fuel transformative structural change across California. This network will consist of new and existing centers serving hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders in California. We aspire to raise the necessary resources to fuel the mission, vision, and programs of the Movement Innovation Collaborative.

The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is focusing on three core strategies to deepen the power, coordination, and impact of the sector. In all three areas, we will create program and infrastructure supports that are additive and synergistic with existing movement efforts rather than duplicative.

  • Movement Strategy and Innovation
  • Intergenerational Leadership Development
  • Healing Justice and Sustainable Work Culture

What You’ll Be Doing:

As the Finance Director at the Movement Innovation Collaborative, you will have a unique opportunity to shape our financial function from its inception. You will oversee a large budget, working closely with a single entity fund holding assets and releasing funds to the Movement Innovation Collaborative.

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and manage financial and cost accounting systems and policies for proper controls, efficiency, and compliance with accounting standards and laws.
  • Own all finance functions, including accounting, internal control, reconciliation, journal entries, payroll, monthly close procedures, and other regularly recurring financial operations.
  • Develop systems for and oversee the disbursement of a significant number of grants to organizations that are part of the Movement Innovation Collaborative network.
  • Lead the annual audit and work with external auditors and accountants to ensure compliance. Prepare and file the annual financial statements and tax form 990.
  • Ensure accuracy, integrity & usefulness of financial reports for various stakeholders, including tracking of restricted funds.

Organizational Leadership

  • Collaborate with program leaders to align financial resources with programmatic priorities and advise on resource allocation to support core strategies.
  • Guide the organization in making informed financial decisions that support strategic goals. Act as a thought leader in financial matters, contributing to the overall growth and success of the organization.
  • Forecast, monitor, and communicate regularly with stakeholders on budget challenges and opportunities; coordinate budget modifications.

Who You Are:

While no one person will embody all of the qualities described below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • A strong alignment with the Movement Innovation Collaborative's mission and culture.
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • 10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, including management experience in complex nonprofit organizations; experience in managing an annual budget of at least $10 million and assets in reserve of at least $50 million.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, plus two to four years of relevant industry experience in nonprofit, VC/PE/Asset Management firms or professional service firms. CPA preferred;
  • Experience helping a growing organization build finance systems, expertise, and controls over time.
  • A hands-on, collaborative leader with integrity and strong communication skills.
  • Experience serving as a business partner to the CEO or Executive Director.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience operationalizing a strategic vision.
  • Deep experience with grants management and public funders.
  • Expertise in cash flow oversight (strategic planning, analysis, forecasting).
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills (internally & externally).
  • Experience partnering with staff, leadership, and an active board.
