Position Summary

The Field Engineer designs and stakes distribution line facilities using established policies of the Cooperative, Rural Utilities Service (RUS) specifications, National Electric Code (NEC), and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) as guidelines for the construction of new line extensions, security light installations, increases in service capacity, primary system improvements, line relocations, ordinary replacements, and line retirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Field Design

  • Create work orders to design and size poles, wires, transformers, services, and line devices, prioritizing safety, and cost-effectiveness to responsibly utilize Cooperative funds.

  • Determine the optimum configuration of Cooperative facilities to ensure and maintain reliable power for all members.

  • Calculate and provide accurate cost estimates.

  • Acquire easements and member consent for construction projects and right-of-way maintenance.

  • Provide an As-Built report after facility construction to appropriate personnel ensuring system maps are maintained and updated.

  • Ensure all necessary data is entered in CIS and staking software for each work order and service order.



    Other Related Duties
  • Perform locates to system facilities.

  • Perform damage assessment and/or Birddog in an emergency or calamity.

  • Recommend improvements that can be made in practices, methods, processes, and procedures within the area of this job responsibility.

  • Will properly use and keep in good condition all tools and equipment.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.

  • Attend safety meetings.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Three (3) years of experience in an Operations related role in an electric utility environment.

Desired

  • Journeyman Lineman Certified.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry and distribution system.
  • Knowledge of RUS, NEC, and NESC standards and specifications.

  • Skill in mathematical calculations.

  • Skill and proficiency in the use of computers, copiers, calculators, and Microsoft Office Platforms (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Skill in verbal and written communication.

  • Skill in time management, organization, and attention to detail.

  • Skill in analytical and critical thinking for analyzing complex problems, evaluating options, and developing resolutions.

  • Ability to prioritize the completion of multiple, time-sensitive tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor.

  • Ability to possess knowledge of engineering practices, power equations and calculations, and relaying specifications and requirements.

  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, and observe Craighead Electric policies, procedures, programs, and safety rules and regulations to effectively carry out job duties.


Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's license.

  • Will be subject to 24-hour call out.

  • Must be able to travel.

  • Must be able to work long shifts during emergencies and outage restoration events.


Working Conditions and Mental or Physical Requirements

Work is generally performed in the field with some office work. Work position is generally varied. Must be able to lift between 5-50 pounds occasionally. Position requires limited physical effort with some lifting or small physical exertion. There are opportunities to relax from any physical exertion or to change position in work activities. May work in extreme weather in emergency on occasion.


Job Description Acknowledgement
