Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated group leader (Principal Research Scientist I) for purification to join the Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) group within Operations Science & Technology -Biologics organization.  Our group is responsible for the optimization, validation, implementation, and continuous improvement for commercial manufacturing of therapeutic proteins at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA.  The candidate should be a discipline expert who drives functional, financial, and quality performance by controlling, improving, and troubleshooting commercial processes as well as designing and implementing studies aimed at new or improved products.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of scientists with expertise in purification. The candidate is expected to proficiently manage manufacturing aspects of commercial support of biologics drug substance process throughout the product life cycle: from technology transfer, process validation to commercial manufacturing, and process improvement in order to meet the financial, quality and throughput objectives.
  • Serves as technical expert for the manufacturing plant with respect to the biological process(es).
  • Responsible for developing, communicating, and implementing the vision and strategy to fulfill functional goals and key scientific objectives. This also involves collaboration with experts within function to integrate scientific objectives into activities associated with development of new/improved products or technology.
  • Advance scientific expertise within the function and proactively demonstrates leadership by advises and sharing of expert opinions with subordinates, peers, and senior management.
  • The candidate also mentors and trains functional colleagues, assesses current and emerging business challenges, enabling functional goal achievement.
  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major project plans within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.
  • Sources and identifies emerging scientific trends from multiple internal and external sources and assess relevance. Integrates trends into functional short-term objectives. Advances cross-discipline technology and direction through generation of data.
  • Applies imagination and innovation by creating, inventing, and implementing new or better approaches, alternatives and breakthrough ideas that are valued by customers within the function.
  • Presents scientific concepts and results for functional scientific and non-scientific leaders as well as potential and existing partners. Maximizes impact and value of expertise.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent education in Biological Science or equivalent education with extensive biologics process purification experience (typically 12+ years of related work); PhD in Biological Science or related field with extensive biologics process purification experience (typically 6+ years of related work experience).
  • Proven biologics process purification technical experience in pharmaceutical companies, with ability and prior experience in the innovation of new or improved product releases, generating original technical ideas and research or development strategies.
  • Demonstrate creative ‘out of the box’ thinking to solve difficult technical problems and champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
  • Interacts well with diverse groups within function and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others in areas of science through excellent communication and prolific writing.
