Zap Energy is currently seeking Associate Research Engineers to help develop the next generation Z-pinch fusion device and its associated experiment systems. Associate Research Engineers will be involved at all stages of development and operation of ultra-high vacuum systems, plasma-facing electrodes, high-performance gas puff valves, plasma diagnostics, mechanical structures and devices, and other experiment systems. Associate Research Engineers will work under the direction of more senior Research Egnineers. Zap Energy offers Associate Research Engineers the opportunity to work with broad focus, own their work, and participate in a dynamic, team-based fusion energy research environment. 

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.   

Responsibilities 

  • Design, build, test, and operation of devices for fusion energy research, including one or more of the following: 

  • ultra-high vacuum systems 

  • plasma-facing electrodes 

  • high-performance gas puff valves 

  • plasma diagnostics 

  • mechanical structures and devices 

  • Operation of fusion z-pinch devices 

  • Development of laboratory infrastructure and processes 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • BS degree in Aerospace / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or Physics 

  • Experience: 0-3 years 

  • computer aided design (CAD), SolidWorks preferred 

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the fundamentals of engineering (mechanical design, thermal design, material selection) 

Preferred 

  • experience in one or more of the following areas: 

  • ultra-high vacuum systems (pumps, gauges, RGAs, and operations) 

  • electrode design, materials selection and evaluation 

  • gas puff valves and other fluid systems 

  • design and fabrication of mechanical structures and devices 

  • plasma science 

  • experience with finite element analysis (e.g. COMSOL or ANSYS 

  • experience with basic electronics, electrical fabrication, AC power 

  • experience with mechanical fabrication methods (lathes, mills, drill presses, etc.)

The estimated salary range for this position is $70k-100k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act. 

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact, and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive and complex magnetic coils. Zap’s sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology provides compelling fusion economics and requires orders of magnitude less capital than conventional approaches. Zap Energy has approximately 150 team members in multiple facilities near Seattle and is backed by leading financial and strategic investors.
