Collaborating with the team, the Senior Underwriter works to achieve growth, profit, renewal retention, and client management goals for the department. As a Senior Underwriter with the Independent Contractors Occupational Accident Program, an exceptional understanding of the competition and product knowledge is required. A senior underwriter proposes specific program developments and exerts underwriting authority as it pertains to binding authority, credit levels and exceptions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Within delegated authority levels and guidelines, accepts, rejects, or modifies new and renewal business for all ICOA Program business with little or no guidance to ensure a profitable book of business.
  • Price business according to underwriting and pricing guidelines and ensures standards for timeliness are met.
  • Communicate and negotiate effectively with markets on referrals
  • Adhere to company-wide minimum service standards
  • Comprehend and maintain underwriting guidelines for all companies represented
  • Handle and manage the book of business to maximize profitability and growth.
  • Review loss activity (frequency, severity) for each agent in assigned territory.
  • Market products in collaboration with the marketing department through agency contacts to achieve company growth and profitability targets.
  • Assess the capacity of market, territory, and individual agencies to identify and act on growth opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with business partners, and keep agents informed of underwriting and/or product changes.
  • Achieve written premium and income goals set by management on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Collaborate on team goals and actively participate in achieving these goals
  • Train, coach and serve as technical resource to other underwriters and associate underwriters.
  • Promote public image of the Company by actively seeking opportunities to speak with insurance related groups and by networking within the insurance community.
  • Travel as deemed necessary by the Direct Manager, to agencies, markets, insurance industry conventions and trucking conventions.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education and Work Experience:

  • 5 years underwriting experience in Occupational Accident
    • AND an RMI or related Degree, CPCU, RPLU, CIW, CIC
  • OR 7 years underwriting experience in Occupational Accident

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to type quickly and accurately
  • Knowledge of underwriting principles
  • Knowledge of policy forms
  • Ability to recognize exposure to loss
  • Strong research skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Effective decision-making skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, make quick decisions and be flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Team Player and mentor to Associate Underwriters and Underwriters
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Interest in selling products and services based on customer need and carrier profitability
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present (both written and verbal) to external business partners, management, and internal business partners.
  • Strong negotiation skills

· Ability to work autonomously with little or no supervision

  • Presents themselves professionally when representing the organization during visits, meetings and conferences

Typical Physical Demands:

· Requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, occasional stooping, and reaching; May require lifting-up to 25 pounds; requires normal range of vision and hearing with or without accommodations.
