Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPosition Summary

The lifeguard is responsible for upholding safety rules, Y policies, accident prevention and emergency response at YMCA pools.

Job Responsibilities
  • All lifeguards must remain physically and mentally alert, taking a proactive approach to searching for distressed swimmers and hazards.
  • Successfully communicate with youth and adults to enforce rules and schedules.
  • Give clear directions in case of emergency.
  • Keep schedule availability up to date. Report for duty with proper uniform -LG shirt, swimsuit, shorts/pants, whistle, hip pack – prior to start of shift.
  • Perform your duty of emergency response, within current certification level, when medically necessary to patrons using the pool or Y facility.
  • Maintain safety of pool environment by removing any hazards that could lead to injury in and around the pool and pool deck.
  • Abide by Ohio State code for clean-up and removal of incidents of water contamination.
  • Lifeguards will be assigned and responsible for cleaning the pool facility, vacuuming of the pool and all other duties assigned.
  • Mandatory in-service training attendance required.
  • Lifeguards must remain physically capable of completing the prerequisite swim test as prescribed by the American Red Cross or YMCA to ensure ability to respond to emergencies.
  • All staff should demonstrate the YMCA core values (honesty, caring, respect and responsibility) in their daily work activities and while representing the YMCA.

Education/Experience Required
  • At the minimum, some high school level education is required.

Training/Certifications Required
  • The Ashtabula County YMCA will cover the expense of staff re-certifications so therefore staff will not be paid hourly to attend the re-certification course. Limitations regarding re-certifications are as follows:
    1. The YMCA will only cover the re-certification cost for staff that plan to remain with the YMCA for 6 months after re-certification.
    2. Staff not continuing employment with the Y are required to pay the cost of recertification.
  • Current YMCA of the USA Lifeguard certification (valid 2 years) or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (valid 2 years) or any other certification that complies with Ohio State Code.
  • Current BLS for the Professional Rescuer for Aquatics (valid 1 year).
  • Current Administering Emergency Oxygen (valid 2 year). Required for YMCA lifeguards and required within 90 days of date of hire for other lifeguard certifications.
  • Current First Aid (valid 2 years).
  • OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens training (annual in-service training).
  • Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training must be completed within the first 90 days of employment and every 3 years thereafter.

Working Conditions
  • Works indoors in adequate workspace with adequate temperatures, ventilation, and lighting.
  • Outdoor work with a variety of settings and a variety of weather: outdoor pools, public beach, or for Y events.
  • Works with average exposure to noise and disruptions. Works with above average stress.
  • Normal exposure to dust/dirt.
  • Subject periodically to irate individuals and stressful situations.

Physical and Mental Conditions
  • Must be able to see, hear and verbally respond to students
  • Required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of appendages and torso to carry out job duties.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Light to medium work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.
  • Must be able to endure long periods of work without a break.
  • Work part of the time outdoors if applicable.
