The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the firm, to include the production of periodic reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the firm’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management & Reporting:
    • Manages the accounting staff, including staff accountant/A/P, time and costs analysts, and accounting clerk.
    • Oversee and manage payroll
    • Oversee and manage attorney origination calculations
    • Establishes and maintains systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data, and enhance the firm’s value
    • Oversees the activities of the accounting department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports.
    • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, check requests, attorney expense reports, and petty cash. 
    • Oversee the reconciliation of al firm accounts
    • Oversees accounts receivables to ensure the accurate and timely management of all aging components
    • Assists both internal and external auditors with their examination of the firm’s financial reports and controls.
    • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
       
  • Law Firm-Specific Accounting:
    • Oversee client trust accounts, and ensure compliance with legal accounting standards and California State Bar Guidelines.
    • Manage the preparation of financial statements
  • Team Leadership & Management:
    • Works well independently and in a team environment
    • Demonstrates dedication to producing quality work product
    • Pays attention to detail when completing work assignments
    • Organizes and prioritizes workload appropriately Utilizes resources appropriately to complete work in the most efficient manner
    • Cooperates and demonstrates flexibility when facing change
    • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance work environment.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews, training sessions, and professional development for accounting personnel.
    • Ensure the team adheres to deadlines, best practices and maintains high standards of accuracy and compliance.
       
  • Operational Oversight:
    • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
    • Oversee the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and managing audit schedules.
    • Streamline accounting processes and introduce innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
       
  • Communication:
    • Interacts effectively and courteously, in person, by telephone, and in writing with attorneys, supervisors, co-workers, and other business professionals
    • Collaborate with attorneys, billing group, and support staff to ensure seamless financial operations and client service.
    • Prepare and present financial reports to senior management and partners.
    • Communicate financial results, trends, and potential risks effectively.
    • Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory authorities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience, with at least 5 years experience in a Controller role, preferably within a law firm.
  • In-depth knowledge of legal accounting practices, billing systems, and trust accounting.
  • Proven leadership skills with a track record of managing and developing accounting teams.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • CashPro experience
  • ProLaw experience is a bonus, but not required.
