Qualifications:

  1. Associate degree preferred
  2. Foundational knowledge in animal care and veterinary services
  3. Minimum of three years experience in either an animal shelter or a non-profit environment, preferably in animal welfare

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

To plan, organize, and develop programs with internal groups (volunteers, fosters, kennel staff, partnering vet) to meet the mission of the Animal Adoption Foundation, AAF. Responsible for the direct day to day operation of the interests and facilities within the framework of policy and authority established by the Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Efficient day to day operation of the shelter including all aspects of animal care (medications and inventory, vaccinations, microchipping, supplies, and preventative care)
  • Evaluate, oversee, and approve adoptions, paperwork, licensing, and any follow-up needed with adoptees
  • Assess animals for suitability for intake
  • Lead and coordinate internal programs that support animal health and well-being (e.g., Meow Mingle, iCare, Walk A Hound)
  • Hire, train, supervise and manage schedules of kennel staff with support from the Director and leveraging the Kennel Staff Supervisor (when AAF has one on staff).
  • Transport animals to and from veterinarian
  • Provide for behavioral and medical needs to improve adoptability of shelter animals
  • Maintain relationships with other shelters and veterinary associations
  • Train, support, and maintain fosters including scheduling appointments, maintaining records, and addressing medical needs
  • Recruit volunteers for events, supervise and delegate work
  • Support social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, website)
  • Act as the Director in his/her absence

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The following skills are necessary for successful fulfillment of job responsibilities: a genuine and deep love for animals, planning and organizational skills, excellent oral communication skills, ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, ability to problem solve quickly, and ability to educate, inspire, motivate, and train others.

Physical Demands: The physical demands must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. In this position, the employee is required to use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands or arms, and talk or hear. Walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, kneeling, crouching, or crawling are necessary. The Assistant Director may be required to represent the shelter in events outside of the 40 hour work week when scheduled.
