Position Summary:

  • Reviews clinical documentation and diagnostic results and applies appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes for billing, reporting, research, and regulatory compliance.
  • Resolves billing errors and assists with workflow changes and process improvement projects.
  • Maintains a productivity and quality standard of 95% accuracy or better.
  • Verifies accuracy of ICD-10 codes and physician abstraction.
  • Stays updated on coding guideline changes.
  • Identifies chargeable items for facility level and assigns codes for diagnoses and treatment for ancillary outpatient encounters.
  • Adheres to ethical coding standards set by AHIMA and official coding guidelines.
  • Performs assigned duties.
  • Utilizes technical coding principles and APC reimbursement expertise to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 procedures.
  • Assigns codes for diagnoses, treatment, and procedures for multiple specialized departments.
  • Determines principal diagnosis, co-morbidities, complications, secondary conditions, and surgical procedures.
  • Assigns MS-DRG, POA indicators, Hospital Acquired conditions, and accurately abstracts discharge dispositions.
  • Queries physicians when documentation is unclear or conflicting.

 

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Five years of progressive inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility.

 

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

 

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • Completion of a certified coding program or graduate of a CAHIM accredited HIT program.
  • CCS Credential.
