The Director of Finance for Vermont Mutual Insurance Group is responsible for working directly with the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Finance and Operations in shaping the financial strategy and guiding the financial direction of the organization, ensuring sustainable growth and profitability. The Director of Finance will assist the executive management team with and influence key decisions in financial planning, investments, and risk management through detailed, rigorous analysis and forecasting, managing capital and investments, and ensuring regulatory compliance in financial reporting.

The role of the Director of Finance for Vermont Mutual Insurance Group reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations and works alongside the company’s top executives and business partners to align financial strategy with corporate goals, participating in strategic decision-making, and report on financial performance.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work alongside the SVP of Finance and Operations to develop and execute a comprehensive financial strategy and operational plans with short- and long-range goals to drive profitability and growth.
  • Lead the financial analysis and reporting process through evaluating trends and scenario analysis, providing accurate financial reports, and anticipating future needs and challenges.
  • Actively manage financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Partner closely with executive leadership and external stakeholders to provide financial insights, advising on strategic decisions, and representing Vermont Mutual Insurance Group in financial discussions with partners, rating agencies, and/or regulatory parties.
  • Manage risks, including financial, underwriting, investment, market, liquidity, and operational risks.
  • Coordinate with the Controller in managing and communicating regularly with various financial institutions, external audit firms, agents, vendors, and others outside the company.
  • Responsible for maintaining a system of internal controls of the company to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and standards, including the NAIC Model Audit Rule reporting.
  • Accountable for leading the company’s Finance function and staff in accounting and financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes to support organizational goals.
  • Lead the development and growth of an engaging environment for Vermont Mutual Insurance Group Finance staff that promotes professional learning and development.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General direction is received from the Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations. The Director of Finance plans and implements a strategy for various activities and projects. Receives only occasional technical assistance. Meets with Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations regularly regarding overall progress/direction of program, with more frequent consultation on special problems or projects.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional and administrative supervision of the Controller, as well as accounting and billing department personnel, if applicable. Includes indirect and moderate supervision of subordinates within the accounting and billing department. Assigns a broad and diverse array of assignments and monitors assignments given and work methods and results frequently. Oversees key vendors and outsourced functions such as investment management, reinsurance, internal control and audit functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college in either Accounting, Finance or Business Administration is required in addition to 15+ years of relevant experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Advanced degree (MBA) and/or professional designations (CPA) are desired. Big 4 or equivalent public accounting experience preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of actuarial science, risk management principles, and/or insurance financial reporting.
  • Solid NAIC Statutory accounting principles and financial reporting technical skills a plus.
  • Understanding of reinsurance strategy and implementation desired.
  • Detailed understanding of various systems that support property and casualty insurance business and there connection to accounting systems and reporting.
  • Experience leading technology and business transformation initiatives advantageous.
  • Outstanding supervisory skills including supervisory experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; good technical writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills providing the ability to deal effectively with other company personnel, as well as agents, insured, vendors and others outside the company.

  • Predominately sedentary office position with high frequency of keyboarding/computer work required.
