Associate Veterinarian

The Associate Veterinarian helps oversee the health of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) shelter population and the Critical Care and Spay Neuter Clinic under the leadership of GBHS’ Chief Veterinarian. This position is flexible and may be full-time or part-time. The Associate Veterinarian works with a team of veterinarians and other clinic support staff to continually develop and maintain day-to-day operations of a comprehensive shelter medicine program, externship program that trains 4th year vet students in soft tissue surgery skills, a trap-neuter-return program, and a spay/neuter program for a full-service animal shelter, including but not limited to:

  1. Diagnosis and treatment of animals throughout the shelter
  2. Caring for sick and injured animals
  3. Surgically sterilizing animals (including some animals owned by the public)
  4. Performing emergency surgical procedures as required
  5. Providing guidance and training as needed for veterinary medical staff
  6. Assisting with training of 4th year veterinary students in the GBHS Auburn and Tuskegee Veterinary Externship Program
  7. Providing Rabies vaccinations for animal care and control reclaims
  8. Going into the community in our mobile medical unit to do wellness clinics through GBHS outreach programs.

Reports to: Chief Veterinarian

Education Requirement: Minimum of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Alabama veterinary license with clean practice record
  • Demonstrated excellent surgical skills
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to work well within a fast-paced environment
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to triage cases and workload
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing
  • High emotional intelligence
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively lead a team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current DEA license or ability to obtain DEA license
  • 5-years’ experience practicing veterinary medicine in a full service, high surgical volume environment
  • Ability to obtain a premise permit from the Alabama Veterinary Board
  • Experience in shelter medicine and/or HQ/HV setting

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Grow GBHS Project Pet SAFE program, helping to decrease shelter intake and reduce euthanasia.
  • Help manage overall health status and disease control of the shelter’s animals.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with local veterinarians.
  • Ensure the humane treatment of animals at the shelter.
  • Support our mission to lower euthanasia rates for healthy and treatable animals.
  • Perform physical examinations on animals in the shelter and evaluate bite cases.
  • Provide immediate medical diagnostics and response on animal health and safety concerns for animals in the shelter.
  • Administer medical and surgical treatment as needed and create treatment plans for veterinary technicians to administer.
  • Work in coordination with management team to manage the shelter’s animal population and dispositions with the goal of saving all healthy and treatable animals.
  • Evaluate animals confiscated for investigations and provide written documentation of evaluation for these cases.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment.
  • Responsible for clear and accurate data entry for proper communications.
  • Perform related work as required.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch, crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must meet minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook.

Work Environment

This work is performed in a fast-paced environment. Employees are exposed to numerous animals (live and deceased), including those with uncertain dispositions. Exposure to conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors. May be exposed to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust animal dander, bites, scratches, parasites, and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals (zoonotic). Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals. Employees are required to act in a safe and responsible manner at all times.
