Job Summary

The Youth Outreach Coordinator develops and conducts outreach/education to 3,000-7,000 youth with an average of 200 suicide prevention classes annually in public and private high schools and middle schools in San Francisco for students aged 12-18 during the school year Aug-June. The Youth and Outreach Coordinator oversees general outreach/education operations through community provider engagement (both traditional and digital) and community engagement and events coordination.  This position reports to the Director of Programs.

Responsibilities: 

Outreach and Education

  • The Youth and Outreach Coordinator maintains all Youth Outreach functions for agency, including scheduling and some attendance/ training at Community Partnership trainings, all annual youth education trainings and provides assistance and attendance to most to larger annual tabeling events.
  • Implementation of outreach/education and outcome reporting for an average of up to 3,000-7,000 youth through an average of 200 suicide prevention classes annually in public and private high schools and middle schools in San Francisco for students aged 12-18 during the school year Aug-June.  During June-August, curricula development, review and implement outreach to non-traditional venues such as CBO summer youth programs, juvenile justice programs, etc.
  • Create and develop new outreach and educational opportunities by researching, and outreaching to community agencies, attending community events, participating in inter-agency programs and taking initiative to talk to hundreds of community members at these events every year.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community members by responding to email, mail, and phone correspondence regarding event scheduling, coordinating, rsvp’s, materials requests, training dates and information distribution.  Work with staff to best coordinate training teams for outreach trainings to community partners.
  • Maintain detailed log of all agency youth outreach and education activities, creates evaluation reports based on client satisfaction surveys and pre/post tests, summarizes evaluations and feedback, and creates monthly outreach outcomes report.

Comm Community Engagement

  • Recruits, coordinates, schedules and organizes volunteers to conduct outreach and education at youth and family events, such as the B-MAGIC Back to School Fair, Sunday Streets, and the YMCA Lights On After School Fair. Lead and coordinate o schedule, organize, and staff large scale community outreach events such as SF Pride, Folsom street Fair and the SF Juneteenth Festival.
  • Develop a cohesive strategy to develop and implement a digital outreach and education strategy to youth.

Partnership Strengthening

  • Deepen existing relationships with community partnerships, event organizers, San Francisco Unified School District, Felton Institute and other entities. 
  • Develop a knowledge based contacts system of all partners and contacts.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE: (knowledge and skills required to effectively perform the job)

  • Experience recruiting, training and scheduling youth for outreach events and supervision of outreach volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS:  (education and work experience)

  • Must have a minimum of 2-3 years work experience in a mental health organization, suicide prevention, youth trainings and education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in a human services field or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience in outreach/recruitment and training of youth.
  • At least two (2) years of outreach and community relationship building.
  • Able to work with and influence a broad variety of people, including adolescents, communities of color, LGBTQ community, parents, and educators.
  • Must be comfortable with supporting people who are suicidal and in crisis.
  • Use high energy, enthusiasm, demonstrated ability to encourage people to participate in campaigns and activities.
  • High social skills and enjoy working with large groups of people
  • Able to work flexible hours (including evening, weekend and holiday hours as needed)
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computers and proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Commitment to support peer/volunteer led crisis support as part of a team.
