Summary

The Resident Advisor is responsible for providing oversight for clients in residential and day treatment settings as well as assisting clients to improve functioning in academic, work, living, social, and leisure environments through reinforcement of skill and resource development.

Key Functions

Promotes and maintains a safe environment conducive to recovery.

  1. Reports client safety concerns to Program Leadership.
  2. Maintains compliance with all established program policies, processes, and procedures.
  3. Conducts situation monitoring in assigned settings to provide a continually safe environment.
  4. Follows established program guidelines for intervening and supporting residents who are in distress while under their supervision.
  5. Assists in monitoring sobriety and helping ensure the absence of all illicit drugs and alcohol in the residency setting.


Provides support in activities of daily living consistent with the client’s recovery plan.

  1. Collects data to contribute to the assessment of individual strengths and limitations.
  2. Provides support consistent with the client’s developmental level, which maximizes client functioning.
  3. Supports residents who need guidance with showering, oral hygiene, laundry, and other activities of daily living as needed.

Facilitates the development of appropriate behaviors, self-expression, and social interaction.

  1. Establishes therapeutic relationships with residents.
  2. Assists residents to utilize free time in a healthy manner.
  3. Initiates interactions in a supportive manner.
  4. Coach residents in social skills, emotional expression, and problem-solving through modeling, behavioral rehearsal, and in vivo practice.

Assists in the provision and/or reinforcement of vocational, educational, social, and recreational rehabilitative experiences for residents.

  1. Helps residents set and monitor progress toward achieving weekly goals in vocational, educational, social, and recreational domains.
  2. Reinforces skill development in domains such as but not limited to social/interpersonal functioning, activities of daily living, work/school readiness, and leisure time.
  3. May co-lead psychiatric rehabilitation and other therapeutic groups as assigned by program leadership and according to their established competencies.
  4. Assists residents with skill development in various settings as assigned.
  5. Documents client progress on their goals according to program guidelines.
  6. Transports residents to various outings.

Maintains a physical and psychological environment that facilitates the improved functioning of residents.

  1. Maintains professional boundaries and confidences with residents.
  2. Models good judgment and appropriate behavior including characteristics such as grooming, personal appearance, speech, and hygiene.
  3. Provides effective and therapeutic limit setting with residents.

Provides input to the Program Staff and participate in other educational and clinical committee work as assigned; contribute to the development of policies and procedures.

  1. Offers observations to Program staff members regarding client care.
  2. Attends and actively participates in program staff meetings.
  3. Serves as an advocate for residents as indicated.

Education Required: High School Diploma

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in a mental health-related field.

License/Certification: License to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Texas.

Experience: Prior experience in a mental health setting is desired.
