Job Description

Practice:

Veterinary Hospital at the Lake provides full-service small animal care to Sherrils Ford, NC and the surrouding communities.

 

We are also home to the region’s only referral specialty center for small animal reproduction. Our board-certified specialists in reproduction, called theriogenologists, partner with our breeder clients and their primary care veterinarians to provide their pets with expertise and compassionate care in male and female reproduction and neonatology.

Position Purpose:

Our unique practice has a great opportunity offering the full complement of theriogenology services regionally, in addition to general medicine & surgery locally.  

 

Our professional team consists of two boarded theriogenologist and one part-time general practicing associate. We are excited to add another theriogenologist to our team

 

Our ideal candidate is skilled in SA general medicine and surgery and has a passion and appreciation for theriogenology. Board-certification and experience in theriogenology are also desired. What is required is a willingness to embrace the world of purpose-bred dogs. Mentorship and on-the-job training will be provided.  Efforts at board certification will be supported. Our specialty work allows our general practice access to state-of-the-art equipment often found only in referral hospitals.

Situated at the northwest corner of Lake Norman in North Carolina, Veterinary Hospital at the Lake sits near the banks of a lovely lake, is close to Charlotte (with an international airport), with Asheville & the Blue Ridge mountains an hour to our west and the beach 3.5 hours southeast. We enjoy all four seasons but rarely shovel snow

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Be comfortable with all aspects of breeding management including ovulation timing, insemination methods, semen collection and analysis, and ideally semen cryopreservation.
  • Be adept at performing transcervical insemination (TCI) using a rigid endoscope.
  • Examine and treat companion animals to detect and determine the nature of disease or injuries, especially in regard to reproductive disorders and anomalies
  • Operate diagnostic equipment and collect diagnostic samples as well as interpret results. This includes performing ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy in the female and other reproductive conditions in both males and females.
  • Perform surgery. Our theriogenologists are expected to be comfortable performing caesarean section and other reproductive procedures, including but not limited to ovariohysterectomy (routine, pyometra, and gravid), castration (routine and cryptorchid), and neonatal dew claw removal and tail docking. We also perform general surgeries and dental procedures - willingness to perform other such procedures is welcomed and encouraged.
  • Advise pet owners on preventative care and treatment options. Prescribe medication as needed.
  • Provide counsel around pet end of life care
  • Maintain patients’ medical records.
  • Ensures compliance with veterinary ethics and relevant statutes, policies, and procedures.
  • As our hospital is both a specialty and general practice, the ideal candidate must be willing to see general practice appointments on an as needed basis. The distribution of theriogenology vs. general practice cases will vary over time, but generally the theriogenology caseload will be at least 50%.
  • We offer an On Call service to our breeding clients who comply with breeding management protocols, excluding major holidays. The ideal candidate will be willing to take On Call responsibilities at select times (shared with the other Theriogenologist at the practice). 
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • DVM/VMD degree from an accredited AVMA institution.
  • Appropriate state licensure.
  • Residency training and board certification or board eligibility by the American College of Theriogenologists is strongly preferred. 
  • Appropriate State Licensure.
  • Eligibility to obtain DEA/BNDD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates professional and courteous presentation consistently with staff and clients.
  • Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance.
