Director of Nursing

JOB PURPOSE:
Directs and coordinates the nursing programs for NTU. Oversees day to day program operations.
This position description indicates in general the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required or assigned to this position.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops departmental plans, policies, procedures, goals and objectives and ensures compliance to regulations.
- Develops, reviews, and revises state-required nursing curriculum.
- Achieves financial objectives by preparing and administering annual budget; presenting and justifying budget recommendations to appropriate personnel.
- Determines required laboratory and classroom equipment needs.
- Exercises leadership in the area of program oversight and curriculum maintenance.
- Conducts periodic program review and maintains appropriate assessment records.
- Coordinates a schedule of course offerings to meet the needs of the students.
- Maintains meaningful agreements with local clinical sites.
- Oversees, markets, and participates in events related to student recruitment and community outreach.
- Coordinates admission and advisement for students in the Nursing program.
- Serves as liaison with community health agencies and regulatory bodies.
- Responsible for the annual ongoing systematic development, implementation and evaluation of the total program.
- Collaborates with administration, staff and faculty to improve efficiencies in customer services, teaching and learning for students.
- Teaches nursing classes.
- Keeps leadership and other departments informed of status of department activities.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research and attending seminars.
- Maintains clinical and educational competencies.
- Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel.
- Supervises and manages personnel including hiring, firing, performance evaluation, and training.
- Prepares and maintains departmental budgets and oversees compliance throughout the fiscal year.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.
- Five (5) years' work experience in a senior administrative position at an accredited institution of higher learning.
- Current Registered Nursing License in New Mexico or a compact state; current CPR Certification by the American Heart Association.
- Valid and clean state driver's license.
- Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.
The Navajo Nation Preference in Employment Act applies to all hiring, promotions or transfers of individuals into this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of education for nursing programs.
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies and techniques in area of expertise.
- Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
- Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
- Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
- Knowledge of health education theory and practice.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines.
- Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills.
- Skill in analyzing problems and implementing recommendations.
- Ability to clearly communicate medical information.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to collect and apply both quantitative and qualitative data.
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
- Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English language.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits, stands, walks, bends, stoops, and squats.
- Use hands for dexterity of motion, repetitive movement of both hands.
- Must occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is generally performed in an indoor setting.
- Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
