Position:

I-ARC is seeking an Advocacy Fellow. Reporting to the Executive Director (“ED”), the Advocacy Fellow works closely with the Deputy Director and engages with all members of the staff.

The Advocacy Fellow supports the ED in all work related to promoting the interests of New York’s immigrant community. Projects may range from litigation to public education to coalition-building to grassroots mobilization to policy-driven research. Critical duties include working with member organizations to determine the needs of various communities around NY State and communicating those needs to stakeholders. The Advocacy Fellow may be called upon to provide defined support to other team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage advocacy resources and toolkits for our 80+ member organizations.
  • Organize lobby days and other advocacy efforts, with support from I-ARC staff.
  • Draft and manage regular social media and blog posts in furtherance of advocacy campaigns.
  • File and assist in the litigation of FOIA matters.
  • Create and lead advocacy efforts including sign-on letters, social media campaigns, and other outreach to the public about matters of interest to our member organizations and the people we serve.
  • Organize panel discussions and other events to create public awareness and education around topics of immigration law and policy.
  • Help draft OpEds and media pitches.
  • Help coordinate comments, advocacy letters, draft or comment on proposed legislation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Masters, J.D. preferred, will consider a B.A. with some experience in immigration law, a DOJ Accredited Representative or paralegal with commensurate experience.
  • Spanish or other language skills preferred
  • Excellent writing skills
  • High energy and a boundless work ethic;
  • Capacity to track and systematize information;
  • Ability to stay highly organized and multitask in a dynamic environment, and to work quickly and accurately under pressure;
  • Independence, good judgment, and diplomatic skills;
  • Professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Exemplary capacity to maintain confidentiality and discretion;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Comfort communicating with outside partners to ask for information
  • A track record for exercising sound judgement and forethought even in the execution of mundane tasks;
  • A track record for going the extra mile at work, consistently taking initiative, thinking ahead, putting in the extra effort, and delivering beyond expectations;
  • Interest in human rights, and/or advocacy
