UNM Health provides the highest quality of care for more than 275,000 New Mexicans each year. In 1952, UNM Hospital was built on Native American grounds, with the promise to provide culturally competent and inclusive care to all New Mexicans. Since then, UNM Health has followed through on their mission of accessible, affordable care. UNM Health providers specialize in over 150 areas of medicine and employ over 8,000 professionals. Together, UNM Health receives 800,000 outpatient visits, 22,000 surgical cases, and 100,000 emergency visits each year. UNM Hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center in New Mexico and houses the state’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit and burn unit.
The Health System includes the University of New Mexico Hospital, the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (the region’s only NCI Comprehensive Cancer Research and Treatment Center), and the UNM Medical Group.
The University of New Mexico Hospital includes its flagship academic medical center, the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital, Sandoval Regional Medical Center, Carrie Tingley Hospital (a children’s rehabilitation hospital), the Adult Psychiatric Center, the Children’s Psychiatric Center, The Metropolitan Detention Center, and over 75 primary care and specialty clinics across New Mexico.
Position Summary
The Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Women’s and Children’s Hospitals (ACNO) will assist the Chief Nursing Officer, UNM Hospitals & Clinics (CNO) with ongoing development, direction, and supervision of UNM Women’s & Children's Hospital. The (ACNO) will function as the nurse executive primarily responsible for coordination of patient access, throughput and flow. Also, jointly responsible with the CNO for ensuring that patient services are in compliance with nursing care standards as well as state and federal regulations.
The ACNO assists in developing and revising nursing policies and procedures, and assists the CNO with nurse recruitment, retention, training and quality assurance. Promotes high quality nursing care with optimal efficiency in the administration of fiscal affairs and other activities concerning nursing throughout the clinical enterprise. Ensures adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures with no patient care assignment.
The ACNO will be a visionary leader, guiding the execution of the nursing strategic plan to achieve the organizational mission and vision. The ACNO’s vision will support the existing high standards and goals for nursing practice while they work closely with the CNO and other nurse leaders across UNM, ensuring and enhancing UNM Hospital as a clinical practice environment that is patient centered, with unsurpassed clinical quality and patient safety.
The ACNO creates and sustains a vibrant and innovative environment for professional nursing where an engaged nursing workforce partners with the healthcare team to provide best in class patient care focused on outcomes in patient safety, quality and engagement.
Professional Experience and Qualifications
- A proven ability to build positive, effective relationships and work from a position of influence in a highly matrixed organization and among multiple constituencies.
- A proven people leader with a track record of recruiting and developing others.
- Experience should demonstrate an executive disposition and a passion for results, having an eagerness to promote a learning culture and to create a culture of safety.
- The ability to evaluate and improve the quality of nursing care, oversee staff development and physician relations, and demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
- This leader must have strong emotional intelligence and be a leader capable of building influence.
- Viewed as a trusted, ethical, and highly visible and effective leader within the organization.
- Experience working in a unionized environment is helpful, but not mandatory.
- Experience with foundations, donors and philanthropy engagements is preferred.
Education and Training
- BSN with a Masters in a healthcare related field or BS with an MSN.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive administrative experience is required, preferably with at least 5 years of directly related experience at an academic medical center or highly complex hospital/health system.
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by State of New Mexico or able to obtain within 60 days of date of position is required.
