Director III, Automotive & Technology

Job Description:

The purpose of this position is to provide Administrative and Instructional leadership for all operations of the College's Automotive programs to include, but not limited to: recruiting, selecting, supervising, and evaluating full time employees; identifying and recruiting qualified full-time and part-time faculty; assuming responsibility for faculty utilization, and coordinating all scheduling, in consultation with Academic Dean, to ensure a functional class schedule; developing, implementing, and overseeing program budgets; representing the College in the region through participation in community, education, business, industry, and civic organizations and activities, as well as in a variety of academically related settings; participating in appropriate College academic and administrative meetings and representing the Automotive programs with all other areas of the College as needed; performing other duties and assume other responsibilities assigned by the Academic Dean; working collaboratively with Academic Deans in providing effective leadership for Automotive Programs; leading and supporting learning centered college activities and planning, and to supervise and oversee the use of all classrooms, facilities and equipment within the Automotive & Technology Center.

Likewise this position is directly responsible for supervising and planning the sequence of schedule and delivery of automotive classes, advising students, managing personnel and tracking equipment, coordinating and assisting with hiring of adjunct faculty, and assisting with risk management as it relates to adhering to policies, standards, and regulations relevant to the industry, supervising staff and faculty, meeting with external agencies to promote the program and staying current with industry standards, as well as, ensuring that the Automotive Programs (degrees and certificates, etc.) are available for traditional and non-traditional students. This position is located at the Windsor Campus Automotive & Technology Center.

Program Management:

  • Plans, develops, directs, manages, and coordinates activities/classes/trainings for the two Automotive degree programs, multiple specialty classes for credit and non-credit, certificates, and the state-accredited classes to include scheduling of full-time and part-time faculty, course offerings, equipment, classroom facilities, curriculum resources, etc.
  • Creates, develops, evaluates and makes recommendations on program and class goals and objectives, mode of delivery, information, curriculum, materials to ensure compliance with internal and external policies, standards and regulations; identifies, acquires, generates, maintains and provides program and other resource materials; works in partnership with other programs on campus to provide additional learning/training opportunities for individuals and for the community.
  • Manages Faculty & Staff:
  • ?? Provides observation, orientation, training, support, and evaluation to program faculty/staff and students; forwards up-to-date information (e.g., emails, phone calls, etc.) on changes in the law, policies and procedures, and so on.
  • Creates, coordinates, and reviews program courses, both traditional and alternative delivery.
  • Plans program operations for the coming year and submits to the Dean.
  • Meets with the Dean monthly to review program.
  • Resolves a variety of problems at the lowest possible level by counseling with students, faculty, and/or community stakeholders concerning program complaints/conflicts/ issues to reach win-win resolutions.
  • Maintains high productivity with training programs and proper placement of personnel based on skill levels.
  • Maintains conformity with government regulations such as OSHA safety, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Promotes high customer satisfaction for work performed by students.
  • Plans, motivates, and coordinates the activities of the program team.
  • Hires and works with new and existing instructors on program development.
  • Examine student outcomes and work toward growing student enrollment and FTE by 5% annually.

Administrative Duties:

  • Develop and maintain the budget for the Windsor Automotive Center. Assess the budgetary needs of each area within the Center and submit annually a balance budget that reflects those needs. Maintain tight controls on the expenditure of allocated budget dollars and be the authorized approving administrator for any expenditures up to standard threshold. Develop and implement a strategic plan that is in line with Board of Trustee goals and growth of the Center.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, committees, task forces, etc., as program liaison, both internally and externally to the college (national, state, and local levels) to provide and receive program input on such things as curriculum standards; mandated policies and procedures; techniques to enhance students' learning, retention and recruitment; maintain required accreditation; build the image of the college, education, community and the county and meeting the needs of the community/agencies/ workforce.
  • Oversees, prepares, and maintains program records and files as required by state agencies, internal policies, and internal and external reviews and NATEF.
  • Monitors and makes administrative decisions (e.g., budget, hiring, off-campus training sites/contracts, and articulation agreements.)
  • Communicates College policies and procedures to all employees and ensures that they are understood and followed.
  • Interacts with the business office to ensure that records and analyses are maintained accurately.
  • Interacts with Students & Community:
  • Creates, prepares, reviews and disperses promotional materials; participates in recruiting, promotional and retention activities; contacts (face-to-face, phone, email, etc.) prospective students; maintains contact with graduates; advises students.
  • Assumes responsibility and is accountable for customer retention and profitability of each department of the Windsor Automotive Center. Fulfills responsibilities using sound business management practices and fact-based decisions.
  • Develops recruiting strategies and assists in creating effective, cost-efficient advertising and promotion materials.
  • Systemizes the daily operating control, recommending improved courses of action where necessary.
  • Develops and maintains a good working relationship with internal and external contracts.
  • Serves as an example of expected professionalism to help shape employee's attitudes and build morale.
  • Directly responsible for scheduling and use of two computer technology classrooms, one Science classroom with lab and two general purpose classrooms.
  • Responsible for training on-site personnel on proper use of facilities and equipment.
  • Resolves customer issues, concerns and/or complaints by meeting/speaking with any dissatisfied customers and/or College personnel.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the Windsor Automotive Program and Center is compliant with the Automotive Youth Education System regulations and/or standards.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Reporting directly to the Academic Dean, this position directly supervises support staff and full-time faculty assigned to the automotive areas. This position will also provide oversight of our part-time faculty and part-time instructional support positions in the automotive area.
  • Supervises purchases of inventory requirements needed for training projects to obtain a high level of service to students.
  • Works with staff to monitor expenses such as shop supplies and policy adjustments.
  • Organizes repair projects order flow, supervises and assigns instructors for open repair reports and work in process.
  • Directly responsible for all program management or supervisory personnel functions and completes formal performance evaluations of all personnel supervised at regularly scheduled intervals.
  • Meets with instructors individually to develop annual goals and objectives, and to review actual performance.
  • Holds regularly scheduled department meetings to ensure that every program is operating efficiently.
  • Reviews all requests for training and travel, approves those which are appropriate and consistent with the institution's goals for professional/technical ability and advancement, and monitors their effectiveness.

Facilities & Grounds Management:

  • Responsible for the coordination of the opening and closing of the Windsor Automotive Facility daily, to include ensuring key card access is working properly both during work and non-work hours.
  • Responsible for dealing with unwelcome guests to the Windsor Automotive Center and/or ensuring that unwelcome guests do not loiter in the Windsor Automotive Center.
  • Directly responsible for working with the Facilities Operations department to repair major facilities issues that cannot be handled by on-site personnel (i.e. major plumbing, heating, ventilation, cooling, electrical and aesthetic repair issues).
  • Responsible for ensuring that the Windsor Automotive Center facility is professional looking in nature (i.e. ensuring that small facilities repair jobs (burned out lights, clogged toilets, etc.) are taken care of in a timely manner to ensure a professional appearance at all times.
  • Responsible for working with Facilities to coordinate snow removal of the parking lot at the Windsor Automotive Center to include the road leading into the Windsor Automotive Center facility during periods of inclement weather.
  • Responsible for administration of the inventory, upkeep, repair and maintenance of all Windsor Automotive Center equipment to include shop tools, lifts, and associated equipment.
  • Responsible for working with the Grounds Maintenance department to ensure that facility grounds are maintained in such a manner as to present a professional facility to the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's preferred; Minimum Requirement-Associate's Degree in Education, Business, Management, Accounting, Leadership, Engineering, Technology, Human Resources, Science and/or Liberal Arts or another related field; Plus,
  • Five (5) years of related experience. Of the required five (5) years of experience, two (2) years must be supervisory and/or demonstrated leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience is preferred.
  • Ability to organize tasks as demonstrated by past accomplishments or experiences.
  • Strong human relations and communication skills.
  • This position requires the use of a company vehicle and/or personal vehicle for business travel.
  • The selected candidate must successfully pass an MVR and be insurable under our insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience at a community college or automotive dealership.

Compensation & Benefits
