Washington DC United States ZipRecruiter Full time

Job Description

NASA Earth Science Division (ESD):
Aircraft are a critical platform for providing satellite simulation datasets, in-situ atmospheric sampling, and high-resolution remote sensing of the earth, oceans, and atmosphere. NASA flight missions can also serve as a training ground for exceptional scientists and engineers interested in building and using the next of earth observing satellites and studying the Earth System.

The NASA Science Mission Directorate ESD Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) has successfully and consistently provided hands-on Earth System science research experience for college and university undergraduate students by leveraging NASA’s airborne assets: platforms, sensors, systems, and people. This eight-week summer program includes approximately two weeks of data collection including flying onboard NASA aircraft, and six weeks at an academic institution analyzing data and carrying out independent research.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The SARP program has projects on the East Coast and West Coast each summer. This position will be one of two SARP Project Managers (PM) required to cover these simultaneous projects. The SARP PM will work closely with the SARP Program Scientists in the planning, organization, and execution of the yearly Student Airborne Research Program for advanced undergraduates. This will require interfacing with university faculty, students, NASA Headquarters leadership, and coordination across the various NASA centers. The SARP PM will also work closely with the other SARP PM and SARP leadership.

The SARP PM will be a contractor employed through Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, with task leadership through the Earth Science Project Office at NASA Ames Research Center. Although much of the SARP PM’s work will be remote, it will require an in-person presence in Washington DC at NASA Headquarters so the SARP PM must be located in the Washington DC area.

Additional Duties Include:
  1. The development and upkeep of the SARP website and application process, both to be hosted on a NASA domain;
  2. Overall promotion of the Program, including the development of Program material focused at promoting the Program for the recruitment of students and overall awareness of the Program (for NASA conference booths and mailings); representation of the Program at relevant science conferences; promoting the Program through communications activities (e.g., traditional and social media by writing articles and blog posts about the Program, providing content to the ASP, SARP, and NASA Earth social media accounts);
  3. Assisting the SARP Program Scientists in recommendations for recruitment of faculty, mentors, speakers, and instrument principal investigators to participate in SARP;
  4. Arrangement of all logistics including transportation, housing, meals, and participant employment and compensation;
  5. The coordination of Program support through the recruitment and oversight of SARP support personnel;
  6. This position will also be the on-site SARP staff member responsible for all participant activities during the Program (including nine weeks of continuous support at either the East Coast or West Coast location during the months of June-August annually);
  7. The development and execution of the evaluation of the Program;
  8. Support of all alumni activities and communication;
  9. The SARP PM will give monthly reports to NASA Headquarters staff on the Student Airborne Research Program, including status reports, schedules, and a final report with evaluation results after completion of the program.
Travel Requirements:

Travel to not exceed 14 weeks a year, to include travel to relevant science conferences, recruiting opportunities, and full support of the eight-week summer Program.

Qualifications:

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a related science discipline. The SARP PM will be expected to have high organizational and strong interpersonal skills, and customer service relations as well as an ability to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of people. The SARP PM should also be able to:

  1. Provide innovative and implementable solutions that are strategic and tactical, and in alignment with the priorities of NASA and SARP;
  2. Communicate, engage, and build consensus with NASA leadership;
  3. Work independently (i.e., self-starter) and operate with minimal oversight;
  4. Manage multiple and competing responsibilities using effective time management and organizational skills;
  5. Manage all resources within the budget provided and make strategic and reasonable decisions;
  6. Actively promote inclusiveness within SARP and the science community.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Work experience in addition to formal education/training:

  1. Two years of project management experience, preferably in a field associated with NASA.
Specific Skills Required:
  1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and oral;
  2. Must be able to function well in a team environment;
  3. Excellent organizational and prioritization skills;
  4. Advanced skill in Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software;
  5. Employee must be willing to travel up to 14 weeks per year, as required, with nine weeks of continuous travel.
Hazardous Working Conditions:

Unusual or hazardous working conditions related to performance of duties:

  1. Noise exposure;
  2. Must be able to work occasional irregular schedule, including night shifts and weekends as required.
