Director of Community Oncology, Tulane University Cancer Center

Position: Director of Community Oncology, Tulane University Cancer Center

Specialty: Hematology, Oncology, Cancer, Medical Oncology, Hematology / Oncology, Leadership, Internal Medicine, Clinical Trials, Clinical Research

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

The Section of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine is seeking a BC/BE Oncologist (or Hematologist/Oncologist) to serve as the Director of Community Oncology for the Tulane University Cancer Center.

The Tulane University is in the midst of an exciting growth phase for the health system and their cancer service line. The incoming Director of Community Oncology will play an integral role in helping to establish community-based satellite cancer clinics throughout the greater New Orleans and Southern Louisiana region. The ideal candidate will be a duly trained physician and oncologist or hematologist/oncologist with 3+ years of post-training experience and an interest in community-based cancer services.

The successful Director of Community Oncology will work closely with Dr. A. Oliver Sartor, Professor & Assistant Dean of Oncology for Tulane University School of Medicine & Medical Director for Tulane Cancer Care to help establish a "hub-and-spoke" network of community-based Tulane oncologists that are based at the 'spokes' but work in an integrated and collaborative way with the large and multidisciplinary cancer services team at the flagship cancer center in Downtown New Orleans, LA (the hub).

Position Specifics Division of Hematology/Oncology

Founded over 50 years ago, the Section has a rich history as an active training program for generations of hematologists/oncologists. Through close affiliation with 3 hospitals including the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, the Southeast Veterans Louisiana Health Care System and the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans, Tulane hematologists/oncologists and trainees see patients referred from throughout the southeast with a wide array of disorders.

Section faculty members possess notable expertise in hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplantation. Section programs in benign hematology include the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders, the only federally funded center in the state providing expert care, and cutting edge research for patients suffering from hemophilia and other coagulation disorders.

The Adult Sickle Cell Day Hospital is an innovative program that represents the only one of its kind in Louisiana and is pioneering effective management strategies, as well as clinical research studies for patients with sickle disorders.

The Section's oncology programs are closely linked with the Tulane Cancer Center, which is dedicated to a comprehensive, disease-specific, team approach to the care of cancer patients. Comprehensive clinics, many with associated multi-disciplinary tumor conferences, are held for patients with breast cancer, otolaryngologic malignancies, gastrointestinal and liver cancers, genitourinary cancer, and hematologic malignancies.

Of particular note are the recently developed programs in liver cancer and prostate cancer, both of which are led by internationally known faculty and attract patients from around the country.

The Tulane Bone Marrow Transplant Program is active in both autologous and allogeneic transplantation and is approved for unrelated stem cell transplantation. Currently, it is the only program in the state that performs allogeneic stem cell transplantation for adults. The program draws referrals from several states, and is active in both clinical and translational research trials.

With a growing base of both clinical and research faculty, the Section enjoys an excellent regional and national reputation as a center of specialized, comprehensive patient care as well as an emerging leader in research in many areas.

Director's Message

Tulane Cancer Center was established in 1993 with a vision to bring better cancer care and research to the citizens of Louisiana. We have always followed the best practices recommended by the National Cancer Institutes, with a mission of developing a NCI-designated cancer center for Louisiana.

NCI designation is the gold standard that would help us bring in the best and brightest to develop and provide better care for this devastating disease. With this vision and mission in mind, the Tulane Cancer Center has grown steadily, except for a brief period around Hurricane Katrina.

We have developed from a handful of investigators with cancer research grants to over 30 principal investigators with over 50 major grants, bringing in $17 million every year. In addition, we have established several areas of clinical strength, with multidisciplinary teams that can provide the best care and clinical trials available anywhere.

I feel lucky to have had the honor and pleasure to work with these incredibly dedicated scientists and physicians. In addition, it has been really inspiring to have the opportunity to interact with our wonderful community supporters.

Blood Cancer Program

The Tulane Blood Cancer Program is committed to advancing the science and care of patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Alongside the Tulane University School of Medicine, we have performed more than 400 life-saving blood and bone marrow transplants, and we are a leader in the New Orleans region as the first fully accredited Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) facility in Louisiana.

Our experienced hematologists and multi-disciplinary team create individualized treatment plans for each patient, and we have access to the latest clinical trials and therapies.

What Sets Us Apart

We are the first FACT-accredited adult center in the state of Louisiana for both autologous and allogeneic transplants, performing related and unrelated donor transplants. FACT is the global standard for top-quality patient care in cellular therapies.

We are the only National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) transplant, apheresis and collection center for adults in Louisiana.

Types of Transplants Offered

Autologous - patient serves as his or her own donor
Allogeneic - another person serves as the patient’s donor
Syngeneic - an identical twin serves as the patient’s donor
Myeloablative and non-myeloablative transplants
