Job Title: Residential Clinic Director, Speech Pathology and Audiology

Department: Speech Pathology and Audiology

Reports To: Speech Pathology and Audiology Department Chair

SUMMARY

This position is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track position. The primary responsibilities of the Residential Clinic Director are to plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer, and monitor clinical learning experiences for residential students on behalf of the Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) department and in coordination with the academic faculty and clinical staff. All responsibilities are completed in a close working relationship with the Distance Education Clinic Director to ensure residential and DE students’ learning experiences are commensurate. The Residential Clinic Director is expected to teach clinical courses; participate in active, collaborative research; and engage in departmental, university, and professional service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are listed below; however, other duties may be assigned.

Calvin Speech & Hearing Clinic

  1. Oversee therapy schedules for the clinic to ensure all students have opportunities to earn sufficient clinical hours, and accreditation and certification standards are met
  2. Collaborate with Calvin University colleagues and community partners to expand clinic offerings and generate client referrals
  3. Track and monitor student clinical hours via current clinical hour software (e.g., Tevera) for purposes of student records and accreditation documentation
  4. Establish general clinic calendar each semester, coordinating academic and clinical schedules
  5. Co-manage electronic medical records system, clinical hours software, and other clinical databases
  6. Oversee acquisition and maintenance of assessment and intervention materials that are aligned with evidence-based practice and culturally responsive services
  7. Supervise clinic sessions as assigned by or agreed upon with department chair and participate in end-of-semester meetings as necessary
  8. Manage team of clinical instructors
  9. Arrange orientation and training for best practice teaching/supervision methods, including new clinical instructor orientation and professional development for current clinical instructors
  10. Monitor and guide clinical instruction to ensure consistency and appropriate teaching/supervision practices
  11. Provide regular and constructive feedback to clinical instructors, facilitating opportunities for professional growth
  12. Conduct and document yearly performance evaluations with clinical instructors
  13. Assist department chair in managing clinical instructor workload and schedules
  14. Direct day-to-day operations of residential clinic, consulting with department chair, program directors, and clinical staff as appropriate.

Off-site Clinical Practicum Placements

  1. Assume sole responsibility for identifying and securing external placement sites (including qualified site supervisors) for graduate student clinicians
  2. Nurture relationships with current placement sites and explore opportunities for additional placement sites
  3. Manage all aspects of clinical affiliation agreements with external placement sites, including – but not limited to – updating content, monitoring adherence to, gathering authorized representative signatures, and storing/organizing.
  4. Arrange training and support for site supervisors in coordination with clinical liaison
  5. Facilitate and support the work of clinical liaison team to ensure clearly defined, collaborative relationships between placements sites, students, and the SPAUD department.

Program Development and Support

  1. Develop, implement, and assess processes and procedures for clinical learning experiences and clinic operation in coordination with department chair and program directors.
  2. Develop, implement, and assess clinical education curriculum across all SPAUD programs in coordination with department chair, program directors, and academic faculty.
  3. Engage core faculty and staff in clinical education planning, implementation, and assessment
  4. Assist department chair in managing fiscal resources for clinical education
  5. Assist department chair and program director with preparing accreditation reports
  6. Teach courses as assigned and/or agreed upon with university and departmental leadership
  7. Integrate faith and learning in clinical education experiences, in the context of classroom learning and one-on-one interactions
  8. Engage in professional development opportunities to develop job-relevant skills and stay up to date on best practice in teaching/supervision and clinical services
  9. Serve as a member of SPAUD Student Support and Accountability Committee

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Position supervises full and part time clinical instructors and administrative staff.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree or clinical doctoral degree in speech-language pathology or related field. Five to ten years of clinical supervision and/or university teaching, along with managerial and administrative experience Familiarity with the Greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan service region, state licensure requirements, ASHA certification and CAA accreditation standards, and HIPPA regulations

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) State of Michigan license for speech-language pathology (or eligible for Michigan licensure)

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Strong written and spoken communication and conflict resolution skills are required as this position involves explaining university policies in difficult situations; writing and editing reports or technical documents; teaching writing and editing of clinical documentation; and coordinating and assessing the work of others. Handles confidential information.

COMPLEXITY

The position requires the ability to solve complex problems and to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Instructions may be furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

The position has independent authority to take actions or make decisions that will affect processes, policies, and people throughout a division of the organization and the customers who are served.

DECISION MAKING/JUDGMENT

This position requires a broad latitude in decision making while establishing goals, plans, and policies for an area of responsibility subject to cabinet-level review.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Interpersonal communication and professional behavior: Must demonstrate core functions in the areas of communication, motor, sensory, intellectual/cognitive, interpersonal, and cultural responsiveness as described by the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Technology skills

  1. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required; familiarity with other Microsoft Office Suite applications desired
  2. Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Moodle)
  3. Experience with electronic medical records
