Radiologic Technologist III - Special Procedures

San Joaquin General Hospital (SJGH), originally established in 1857, is a general acute care facility providing a full range of inpatient services including General Medical/Surgical Care, High-Risk Obstetrics and Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatrics and Intensive Care. The hospital's Ambulatory Care sites provide over 1,340,000 outpatient clinic visits a year.

The Diagnostics Imaging Department is comprised of seven specialties: Radiography, CT Scan, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Mammography and Interventional Radiology. The department sponsors a Radiologic Technology training program.

Recruitment

This examination is being given to fill multiple vacancies in the Diagnostics Imaging Department at San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background as a condition of employment. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

The following incentives and bonuses may be available for eligible new hires:

  • Vacation Accrual Rate: San Joaquin County vacation accrual rate consistent with the candidate's total years of public service.
  • Sick Leave: Candidates leaving other employment may receive credit for actual non-reimbursable sick leave hours (up to 160 hours) from their last agency.
  • New Hire Retention Bonus: $2,000 upon completion of first year, $1,000 upon completion of third year, and $3,000 upon completion of sixth year equivalent employment.
TYPICAL DUTIES

* Assists radiologist or other physician performing examinations; calculates, prepares, and administers dosages of pharmaceutical; prepares and positions patients for display of body area to be studied; positions machine; adjusts controls to produce products of required diagnostic quality.

* Performs fluoroscopic x-ray examinations; assembles equipment; measures and mixes barium and contrast media; observes patient reactions for signs of distress; performs radiographs during and following examinations.

* Prepares rooms for fluoroscopic x-ray and mammography examinations.

* Conducts special complex imaging procedures such as angiography, CT scanning, cardiac catheterization, and arthrography.

* Instructs and prepares patients for diagnostic imaging procedures; selects appropriate equipment and determines most suitable anatomical positions and shields patients accordingly.

* Operates a variety of special equipment, prepares especially equipped rooms for scheduled examinations, and operates mobile equipment in other hospital areas.

* Records patient information and maintains records as required.

* Demonstrates all procedures to students and technicians; monitors trainee's performance of procedures; corrects faulty techniques and explains appropriate methods.

* May serve as lead workers; may prepare staff schedules; may assign and review the work of Radiologic technologists, students, and clerical staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years experience performing diagnostic imaging in an acute care facility or medical clinical setting. Must have experience and demonstrate competency in radiography, fluoroscopy, CT scanning or special procedures such as MRI, MRA and associated MR studies.

Licenses and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, certification by the Department of Health, State of California as Radiologic Technologist, and ability to obtain a Fluoroscopy permit by completion of a 12 month employment probationary period.

Special Requirement: Possession of certification as an MRI Technologist may be required.

KNOWLEDGE

Methods and techniques used in complex and specialized diagnostic radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations; care and use of x-ray equipment; and safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation.

ABILITY

Position requires sitting, standing, manual dexterity, bending or stooping and lifting of patients; position patients for a variety of imaging examinations; learn a variety of film making and processing equipment; independently produce images; analyze films and evaluate problems; establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians and fellow workers.

Selection Procedures

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will go through the examination process.

  • Written Exam: The civil service written exam is a multiple choice format.
  • Oral Exam: The oral exam is a structured interview process.
  • Rate-out: A rate-out involves a paper rating of the candidate’s application.

Note: The rating of 70 referred to may be the same or other than an arithmetic 70% of the total possible points.

Testing Accommodation: Candidates who require testing accommodation must call Human Resources Division prior to the examination date.

Physical Exam:

Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.

Pre-Employment Drug Screening Exam:

Some classifications require a new employee to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

If you are offered a job you will be required to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or other documents that establish your eligibility to be employed in the U.S.

Office hours:

Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; excluding holidays.
