Department: 10 West Tower - Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU)

Work Type: Full-Time - 36 Hours per week (0.9 FTE)

Shift: Night - 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM

Work Schedule: 12 Hour Shifts - Weekends Included

Summary:

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs a variety of clinical and environmental tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The PCT duties are of a technical nature requiring specialized training and skill. The PCT demonstrates the ability to care for patients of all ages in the clinical setting. The PCT exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Maintain current BLS certification.
  3. Prior formal clinical training. This may include CMA, CNA, PCT, EMT, corpsman, paramedic, and nursing or medical student experience.
  4. Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
  5. Ability to solve simple problems.
  6. Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  1. Prior clinical experience in an acute care setting.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the RN in the delivery of patient care.
  2. Reports to charge RN or designate for assignment of duties.
  3. Maintains a safe patient environment.
  4. Sets priority of duties based on needs of patient and unit, under the direction of the RN.
  5. Under the direction of the RN, participates in the implementation of individualized plans of care.
  6. Assists patients in activities of daily living.
  7. Accurately obtains patient data and documents all care in the appropriate patient care record.
  8. Performs routine procedures, treatments and specimen collections.
  9. Demonstrates aseptic technique, when necessary.
  10. Assists RN or physician with advanced procedures.
  11. Assists the nurse in the management of uncomplicated tubes and drains.
  12. Performs specific patient care procedures such as blood glucose testing, specimen collection, etc.
  13. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific variables and growth and development.
  14. Immediately reports changes in patient condition to the appropriate RN.
  15. Transports patients and (other) items as needed.
  16. Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients.
  17. Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required.
  18. Obtains blood products, supplies and equipment as necessary.
  19. Competently utilizes technology.
  20. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the telephone and patient call system(s).
  21. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of EPIC.
  22. Consistently documents in real time at the point of care.
  23. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of selected unit specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment.
  24. Maintains a safe and orderly, well equipped environment.
  25. Maintains a safe work environment: Keeps patient rooms and unit orderly, according to guidelines and unit routine.
  26. Independently orders, organizes, and restocks according to unit specifications.
  27. Replenishes patient room supplies.
  28. Maintains emergency supplies.
  29. Demonstrates a professional work style in interactions with internal and external customers.
  30. Communicates all pertinent information to the appropriate team member throughout the shift and to the oncoming shift.
  31. Negotiates break time and communicates departure and return time per unit protocol.
  32. Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits.
