Job Summary

The John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) proudly supports and facilitates global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators; build partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad; and train the next generation of scientists to address global health needs. The FIC is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of International Training and Research (DITR). This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to advance health through administering the Center’s extramural programs that support scientific research and international training to reduce disparities in global health. FIC seeks a strong and visionary leader to support global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators.

The DITR Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Center’s extramural research, research training, capacity building and fellowship programs. Annually the average extramural budget is approximately 76% ($71.6 M in FY2024) of the total FIC appropriation generally, with additional co-funding equivalent to approximately 46% ($32.9 M) of the total extramural budget from other NIH ICs and federal agencies. At full capacity, the Division Director supervises twelve full-time employees and oversees three contract support staff. This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to serve as Director of the Division of International Training and Research at the FIC and to advance health through administering the Center’s extramural programs which support scientific research and training internationally to reduce disparities in global health.

Required Qualifications

The FIC seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in biomedical science and have senior-level research and research administration experience. Applicants should be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, as individuals of outstanding scientific competence and research administration. Applicants should have senior-level research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to global health, including, but not limited to infectious and neglected tropical diseases, non-communicable diseases, and/or implementation science, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Applicants also must have demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing program objectives and priorities. Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources, including supervisory experience. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to lead a research and training program involving extensive internal and external collaboration, including coordinating institute and center-level scientific research and training activities with ongoing research programs in collaboration with the other Institutes and Centers across the agency. In this regard, the desired candidate should have knowledge and experience with extramural programs either as a program officer managing extramural grant awards or from previously having been a principal investigator on extramural grants and having served on study sections.

Benefits

The Director, DITR will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.
