The Human Resources Generalist (HRG) implements and is the daily point of contact for employee benefits, employee relations, leave of absences, worker’s compensation, progressive discipline, and wellness programs. The HRG also supports the department by assisting with new employee onboarding, participating in new hire orientation, and addressing Human Resources policies and procedures.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintains and implements employee benefits programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, employee assistance programs, retirement plans, and wellness programs.
  2. Manages daily benefits operations, enrollment, education, and customer service; manages applicable vendor relationships.
  3. Serves as primary contact to provide benefits education and enrollment for new hires and existing staff; assists new staff in completing benefits enrollment forms and addressing issues related to benefits.
  4. Manages annual open enrollment processes and systems, including online employee enrollment portal.
  5. Coordinates enrollment elections and ensures timely, accurate, and efficient transfer of enrollment data to all vendors, and payroll deductions.
  6. Responds to employee relations issues such as employee complaints, harassment allegations, and other employee/manager workforce concerns.
  7. Implements workers’ compensation program, including supervisor/staff training and communication, reporting, procedural compliance, and retention of all necessary accident report record keeping, including generating OSHA 100 and 300 forms.
  8. Processes and onboards new employees.
  9. Processes employee terminations.
  10. Partners with employees/management to communicate and explain HR policies, procedures, laws, and processes.
  11. Supports all employee leave processes (FMLA, medical, workers’ compensation, discretionary leave); answers employee/supervisor questions, ensures processes and policies are followed and required documentation is submitted.
  12. Collects, reviews, and analyzes data and information on benefits plans to inform department performance and strategic direction.
  13. Maintains employee leave and ADA records in accordance with HIPAA and applicable laws.
  14. Administers 401(k) and maintains participant records.
  15. Assists with responding to and/or triaging inquiries in the HR email inbox and phone line, including verifications of employment.
  16. Assists with processing personnel changes such as transfers, promotions, salary, and other personnel changes.
  17. May assist with processing invoices for payment via check request or in Finance data system.

Candidate qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field required. Candidates with less than a Bachelor’s degree but at least five years’ closely related experience may be considered.
  2. A minimum of three years’ experience in a human resources generalist capacity, including benefits, leave management, and/or employee relations required.
  3. Experience working in a non-profit organization preferred.
  4. Experience utilizing a Human Resource Information System (HRIS) is required. Experience with UKG Pro is strongly preferred.
  5. Demonstrates effective communication skills, both written and oral; consistently writes clearly and concisely for various mediums and audiences.
  6. Demonstrates intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft 365, Outlook, and human resources information systems; develops competency with applicable web-based systems used by the department within the first 90 days of employment.
  7. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills to identify potential conflicts and proactively produces resolutions, problem-solve, and make sound decisions utilizing appropriate judgment.

Job details:

  1. Compensation : Salary Range starts at $58k; offers are commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience.
  2. Benefits: Medical/dental/vision insurance, 3+ weeks paid time off in the first year including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day (PTO increases with tenure); 11 paid holidays, supplemental insurance options, 401(k) with match.
  3. Location: 200 West Monroe Street (downtown Chicago loop).
  4. Schedule: Full-time, salaried. Regular business hours with remote flexibility 3-4 days/week.
  5. Student Loan Forgiveness : Brightpoint is an approved agency for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
