Job Overview: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) manages business and financial services to support the tribal mission and vision while supporting the SMSC ‘s Business Council objectives. The CFO will be a key strategic partner, responsible for overseeing the company's financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting, as well as driving operational and financial performance to support the tribe’s growth objectives. The CFO will ensure that the tribe derives maximum benefits from the expenditure of tribal financial resources; provides information and serves as a resource to others; achieves defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing, and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; and serves as a member of the Business Council leadership team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the SMSC entire financial reporting portfolio, supporting business & economic development objectives with detailed forecasting, and establishing strong interpersonal & trusting working relationships with the SMSC Business Council and SMSC General Council members.

Who We Are: The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community contributes both time and financial resources across the region, state, and country. The SMSC has donated more than $400 million to organizations and causes, provided $500 million in economic development loans to other tribes, and contributed millions more to support regional governments and infrastructure. The SMSC's Native Green initiative annually diverts hundreds of tons of waste from landfills, has implemented compostable containers throughout our properties, and restored hundreds of acres of prairie land. Job Requirements:
Reflects MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, CERTIFICATION and EXPERIENCE required in order to meet the expectations of this job:
Educational:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field.
- Master’s degree and/or CPA strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in tribal government, government business administration, finance, accounting or related field; with progressive leadership experience.
Technical:
- Experience in managing an organization’s IPS and investment portfolio, focusing on investment strategy, asset allocation, and performance monitoring.
- Ability to manage cash flow planning process and ensuring funds availability.
- Experience exploring new investment opportunities and providing recommendations on potential returns and risks.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, GASB, FASB, and other laws and regulations pertaining to financial accounting.
- Experience with large scale, transformational and/or process improvement initiatives.
- Strong understanding of process improvement methodology.
- Working knowledge of budget preparation and analysis.
- Knowledge and experience in a computerized environment.
- Experience in the implementation of financial/ERP systems in a complex environment.

- Superior learning agility, problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication (verbal, written, interpersonal), presentation and collaboration skills at the senior level, with the ability to interpret complex data, documents, legal documents and the ability to synthesize the data.
- Shows openness, and desire to tackle new challenges and situations.
- Provides informal feedback on an ongoing basis to team members.
- Demonstrated effective leadership experience in collaborative decision-making and strong communication skills.
- Proactive in thinking and participates as a thought leader for the SMSC.
- Ensures and promotes the development of the area management team/succession planning through coaching, training, and leadership development.
