POSITION SUMMARY

The Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist and Psychiatry Residency Core Faculty treat children and young people up to the age of 18 with a range of mental health conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, depression and eating disorders. This role is an academic appointment to not only to teach Psychiatry residents, Family Medicine Residents, as well as interprofessional students ie PAs, NPs, LCSWs, LPCs, Certified Recovery Specialists, Case Managers, Community Health Workers and medical students inclusive of ATSU SOMA.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & FUNCTIONS

  • Meet with patients and evaluate their conditions, disorders, or disabilities.
  • Diagnose mental and affective conditions.
  • Develop treatment plans, using therapies and counseling, and determining when psychiatric medication is necessary and appropriate.
  • Assist patients as they cope with difficult situations.
  • Educate family members or guardians on supporting patients.
  • Consult for social services and court systems as deemed necessary.
  • Provide psychiatric services to all patients, consisting of an initial psychiatric evaluation, a medication check and a follow-up psychiatric evaluation.
  • Complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation including but not limited to making DSM V diagnosis, assessing medical, social and environmental factors that support the diagnosis, providing clear justification for prescribing medications.
  • Complete referrals and recommendations to a residential, in-patient, or detox when patients are in need of a higher level of care.
  • Assist or recommend the use of PA 302-303 Mental Health procedures act system and filing child line reports as a mandated reporter.
  • Review and sign the Recovery Plan of all patients, including making recommendations and assisting other providers in the formulation of the patient Recovery Plan.
  • Sign and produce client reports requested by SSI, SSA, MA or any private insurance company. Reports could be produced by other clinical personnel as long as the physician is satisfied that the report is properly prepared.
  • Communicates and maintains positive relationships with all managed care companies, community agencies, primary care practitioners, schools, and any other individuals involved in the patients care/treatment as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings, clinic huddles, and other meetings as necessary or required.
  • Maintain update and sign medication notes and the medication log sheets, consent to medication documents ensuring to provide psychopharmacological education to all patients.
  • Model collaborative practice by fostering a culture of trust, respect and fairness to all stakeholders and all clinical staff.
  • Be a resource for the primary care physicians and the integration of behavioral health into primary care.
  • Serve as a collaborative physician for psychiatric nurse practitioners and others.
  • Attend administrative and clinic meetings and provide in-service education as appropriate.
  • Assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process or orientation of new staff when requested.
  • Provide a full range of psychiatric services to assigned patients, including assessment, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.
  • Prescribe medication to patients as appropriate and conduct medication management.
  • Document all services in the patient’s electronic medical record in a timely fashion.
  • Analyze and evaluate patient data and test findings to diagnose nature and extent of mental disorder.
  • Collaborate with internal and external physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
  • Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social and medical history obtained from patients, relatives, and other professionals.
  • Examine or conduct laboratory or diagnostic tests on patients to provide information on general physical condition and mental disorder.
  • Provide forty (40) hours of service per week, including thirty-two (32) hours of direct patient care per week (75 visits per week).
  • Participate in behavioral health on-call rotation, which may include after hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Assist with the development of evidence-based clinical standard operating procedures.
  • Uphold federal and state mental health regulations.
  • Adequately completes required peer reviews or other audits within required time frames.
  • Timely completion of patient records in accordance with the organization’s Open Document Policy.
  • Demonstrate compliance and highest integrity with industry recognized billing practices.
  • Achieve and maintain Board certification, CMES, ACLS/BLS certification.
  • All other duties as assigned.

PSYCHIATRY RESIDENCY CORE FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Precept residents in outpatient and as necessary the inpatient setting.
  • Lead 8-10 resident didactic conferences per academic year.
  • Be a role model of professionalism.
  • Demonstrate commitment to delivery of safe, quality, cost-effective, patient-centered care.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents.
  • Devote sufficient time to the educational program to fulfill supervisory and teaching responsibilities.
  • Administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating all learners such as residents, medical students, interns etc.
  • Regularly participate in organized clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and conferences.
  • Pursue faculty development designed to enhance skills at least annually.
  • Participate in annual program evaluation.
  • Participate in curriculum development as requested.
  • Participate in scholarly activity and assist program with the demonstration of accomplishments in at least three (3) of the following domains:
  • Assist with monitoring resident stress, with the goal of identifying mental or emotional conditions that inhibit performance and/or learning and advise the Program Director.
  • Complete annual ACGME faculty survey.
  • Must directly observe, evaluate and frequently provide timely feedback on resident performance during each rotation or similar educational assignment.
  • Timely completion of resident evaluations documented us MyEvaluations.
  • Actively participate in Clinical Competency Committee meetings.
  • Actively participate in resident interviews as requested.
  • Participate in resident orientation and graduation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MD/DO Degree.
  • Graduate Medical Education in an ACGME Accredited Psychiatry Residency Program with 2 years of additional specialized training in psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families in an accredited residency in child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • Current certification by the Board of Psychiatry or possess qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee.
  • DEA Certification.
  • BLS and ACLS Certification.
  • No history of professional misconduct, as documented by National Data Bank, Child Abuse and Criminal History clearances.
  • Valid physician license for State of Pennsylvania.
  • Previous leadership / administrative experience required.
  • Be willing to combine administrative/teaching and patient care responsibilities.
  • Possess strong administrative and team building skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to manage a wide range of relationships with colleagues, and patients and their families.
  • Emotional resilience, a calm temperament and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Teamwork and the capacity to lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Outstanding organizational ability and effective decision-making skills.
  • First-class time and resource management for the benefit of patients.
  • Previous participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency program or graduate medical education administrative experience is highly desired.
  • Recent scholarly activity such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educational organizations highly desired.
  • Valid driver’s license.
