GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT


The Lead Technologist is responsible for coordinating and maintaining an efficient utilization of available imaging time and staff coverage daily. Performs clinical and research diagnostic and therapeutic molecular imaging protocols, inclusive of single photon and PET. The technologist must be able to perform diagnostic or attenuation correction Computed Tomography as ordered in conjunction with SPECT/PET exams. Completes testing for both in and outpatients within various hospital locations. Observes radiation safety techniques, (ALARA) including use of protective shielding and handling and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize exposure to infectious, radioactive, or biohazard agents. Follows Institutional/ Departmental guidelines for patient safety and patient care. On-call responsibilities as assigned and remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary. As a teaching institution, technologist a ssist in on-the-job training of new hires and students. Schedules special Nuclear Medicine exams as needed. This responsibility includes ordering isotopes, explaining exam preparation to the patient and then informing the Clinical Managers.


Supervises and instructs various personnel, students and residents within the department. Facilitates the ongoing development skills of all staff within the Division. Works with the Clinical Managers to optimize imaging protocols and expedite inpatient and ER imaging requests. The lead technologist covers on call procedures and procures radiopharmaceuticals for day and on-call studies. Acknowledges and participates in research studies, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department (c-list, patient waiting time, etc.)


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


(1) Assays, records, prepares, and administers radiopharmaceuticals.


(2) Operates SPECT, SPECT/CT and PET/CT imaging and radiation detection equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information.In doing so, ensures the patient is properly prepared.Positions and immobilizes patient as needed.Selects proper imaging and data processing techniques.


(3) The technologist will be required to perform Computed Tomography Imaging (attenuation correction and diagnostic CT) as ordered in conjunction with SPECT and PET exams.


(4) Explains exam to patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs, maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).Delivers patient care under the scope of license/training.


(5) Maintains effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel, i.e., medical staff, nursing, etc.


(6) Calibrates and verifies the operation of all equipment to be used during the workday, notifying appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed. Performs quality control procedures on all equipment


(7) Completes paperwork, RIS and Epic functions as necessary for each patient exam.


(8) Remains up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment by reading appropriate manuals and technique journals.Participates in education programs, meeting state requirements for continuing education credits


(9) Supervises and teaches Nuclear Medicine Technology students within the department.


(10) Prepares the equipment, room, and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use.Stocks and supplies room as needed.


(11) Assays, records, and disposes of radioactive waste and contamination.


(12) Assumes responsibility for on-call coverage and remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.


(13) Acknowledges and participates in research studies, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department (c-list, patient waiting time, etc.)


(14) Performs all other duties as directed.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS


1. Must be a graduate of an approved school of Nuclear Medicine Technology.


2.Must possess a valid Massachusetts license as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.


3. Must be registered or eligible for certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-N) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB ). Must meet, successfully complete, and maintain the ARRT or NMTCBcertification and registration within one year of start of employment


4. Diagnostic CT certification is required within one year of hire date


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED


1. Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.


2.Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of radiation detection, imaging and computer processing techniques, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.


3. Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to frequent interruptions, roles and work assignments, and patient emergencies.


4. Present a positive attitude and a professional appearance.


5. Must be physically capable of lifting, (linen, supplies, patients, etc.), as well as operating the equipment.


6. Must develop a working understanding of the Epic and NMIS applications.


7. Must be aware of hazards within the department, adhering to safety standards established by Brigham & Women's Hospital and other regulatory agencies (ionizing radiation, nuclear reactor by-product material, universal precautions, etc.).
