Job Description - Radiologic Technologist - Operating Room (Neuro Program) (231082)

Shift: Full time, Days and Nights, 40 Hrs/week

Reporting to the Director of Radiology/Imaging with accountability to the manager and under the direction of the surgeons and the radiologists performs surgical diagnostic procedures in surgery, as needed, and other diagnostic x-ray procedures; trains and supervises students in the Surgery Department area.

  1. Performs all types of diagnostic procedures with strong emphasis on surgical diagnostic procedure examinations using a c-arm, including but not limited to Cholangiograms, hip pinnings, femoral roddings, retrogrades, pace maker implants, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, femoral bypass, O-Arm and Pain Management. Ability to perform Medtronics Stealth Navigation a plus.
  2. Performs diagnostic x-ray procedures, as assigned. Explains procedures and exams to patients and provides appropriate instructions. Ensures that patients are properly prepared and prepped for various procedures prior to case. Positions patient for exam and applies immobilization devices, as required. Monitors patient's condition frequently during procedure; reports any change to the physician. Retrieves medications that are not controlled substances. Utilizes and promotes AIDET concepts for all customer interactions.
  3. Assists patients from wheelchairs and stretchers on and off the surgical tables as well as diagnostic x-ray tables.
  4. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat, and care for all age groups of patients (neonatal through geriatric); implements assessment/treatment/care based on the developmental stages of the patient. Involves family/guardian in plan of care and conducts patient and family education, as appropriate, considering the developmental needs of the patient.
  5. Participates in ensuring aseptic conditions are maintained in the Surgical room during the examination process; Cleans all radiographic equipment after each patient.
  6. Processes images and checks for proper quality.
  7. Reports any diagnostic equipment in surgery malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor as well as able to place service request.
  8. Assists in maintaining adequate levels of supplies in work areas.
  9. Supervises activities of students assigned to surgical work area and assists in appropriate training of students.
  10. Participates in "on-call" rotation schedule.
  11. Schedules exams and maintains quality of services in the Surgery area in the absence of the Primary Lead Surgical Technologist. Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.
  12. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth by attending Continuing Education classes, seminars, and reading professional journals.
  13. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies and procedures.
  14. Able to work Holidays as well as take Holiday call.

Qualifications

  1. Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program required.
  2. Current ARRT registration with certification in Radiography and Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Dept of Nuclear Safety accreditation (IEMA) required.
  3. One year experience as a general radiographer with operating room and Pain Management experience or an NCH student Radiologic Technologist graduate with 3 months experience in surgery/OR required .
  4. Current CPR certification required from American Heart Association.
  5. Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.
  6. Demonstrated ability to perform numerous radiographic examinations in OR, Pain Management, ER, fluoro and general exams.
  7. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients who may be anxious or confused and to interact with surgeons and other hospital staff.
  8. The analytical ability to determine proper patient positioning and to determine quality of exams performed.
  9. The communication skills necessary to inform patients regarding examination procedures and discuss procedure requirements with surgeons.
  10. The ability to maintain a flexible work schedule which includes accommodating patients past scheduled work hours.
  11. The ability to use a computer to perform the representative functions and competencies of the job as defined by the Radiology Department.
  12. The ability to work in all areas of X-Ray including OR, Spine Center/Pain Management, Fluoro, ER and OP area.
  13. May be required to work at Off-site facilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Moderate physical effort. Requires continuous standing or walking. Requires frequent lifting or moving of average weight material (positioning and moving equipment) and occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight material (transferring patients) in difficult work positions.
  2. Flow of work and character of duties involves concentrated mental/visual attention much or all of the time along with manual coordination.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Conditions are acceptable. At least one disagreeable element or hazard, i.e. risk of exposure to radiation, is frequently present in the environment and there is occasional exposure to infectious diseases.
