I. General Summary

Under general supervision performs a variety of routine and specialized technical procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory/Interventional Radiology Department. Assists physicians in the performance of cardiovascular diagnostic testing and other therapeutic/interventional procedures.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • If certified by ARRT: Operates fluoroscopy, digital angiography equipment, applying ionizing radiation to cardiology patients in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Operates hemodynamic assessment tools including cardiac output, blood gas analyzers, and patient monitoring equipment such as blood pressure cuffs and electrocardiograms.
  • Operates procedural equipment including Intravascular Ultrasound, Fractional Flow Reserve, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Impella, Anglo-Jet, and Power Injector.

III. Education and Experience

  • Associates degree or diploma from accredited radiologic technology/RCIS/RCES program.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • ACLS certification is preferred, but the employee has one year to obtain it if first-time.
  • Certification from the ARRT as an RT(R)(CVI), RT(R)(CI), or RT(R)(VI) and licensure by the Maryland Department of Health as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.
  • Maintenance of 12 contact hours of education every year.

IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of radiology and cardiovascular principles including anatomy, physiology, radiation protection, and general nursing procedures.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment including EKG, ACT, blood gas analyzers, pulse oximeter, and defibrillators.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to work with patients and medical personnel.

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions through participation in hospital safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to management.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes and communicates them to those in charge.
