Program Analyst II – Organizational Effectiveness (in partnership with UC Berkeley)

The U.C. Berkeley-Haas School of Business through the Center for Social Sector Leadership offers this unique year-long fellowship in philanthropy at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (Foundation) to provide next generation leaders with an opportunity to engage with philanthropic and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) leaders and work with a grantmaking team serving diverse issues and populations with the Organizational Effectiveness grantmaking team.

The vision for this partnership is to strengthen the future of philanthropy and civil society by providing recent graduates from diverse disciplines and backgrounds a professional-level introduction to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. The goals of the program are to introduce recent graduates to philanthropy and the role of NGOs to strengthen their impact in a future career and to introduce the Foundation to ideas, skills, and diverse perspectives.

About the Packard Foundation

We are a family foundation, guided by the enduring business philosophy and personal values of Lucile and David Packard. We invest in effective organizations and leaders, collaborate with them to identify strategic solutions, and support them over time to reach common goals. The Foundation’s goals and how it carries out its work reflects its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

About Organizational Effectiveness (OE)

OE aims to increase the effectiveness of grantee leaders, organizations, and networks, enhancing their capacity to achieve their mission. One core belief has driven Organizational Effectiveness since the program began in 1983: Organizations are more effective when they are equipped with thoughtful strategy, strong leadership, and sound operations.

OE funding helps organizations strengthen their fundamentals so they can focus on achieving their missions. OE provides funding to current Foundation grantees to help them build core strengths in areas like strategic and business planning, financial management, board and staff leadership, communications, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Work with the OE team to implement capacity building strategies and partnerships with the Foundation’s programs in Children, Families and Communities; Conservation and Science; and Population and Reproductive Health.
  • Conduct research and analysis on topics to inform the grantmaking, strategy development, and implementation.
  • Work on special projects such as a year-end narrative review of OE’s grantmaking to share with Foundation programs; cohort work with a group of grantees and multiple funders; diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in foundations; beneficiary feedback to incorporate in grantees’ advocacy work.
  • Assist with strategic planning and monitoring, evaluation and learning activities associated with the OE grantmaking.
  • Assist with grantmaking, including working with grantees to develop proposals, monitor progress, and review reports.
  • Interact with the Foundation’s staff, grantees, funding partners, government agencies, and content experts to complete assigned projects.
  • Engage in both the University and Foundation communities, including attending conferences, forums or workshops that are related to the Program Analyst’s work and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Graduate level education on relevant topics or commensurate work experience.
  • Intellectual agility and ability to analyze, conduct research, think critically, and understand economic, social and policy studies.
  • Ability to structure analysis, perform synthesis, and provide written reports with recommendations which meet project objectives and timelines.
  • Strong skills and capability of understanding both quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, and ability to efficiently manage multiple simultaneous tasks and projects.
  • Strong cultural competence and a commitment to increasing diversity and equity in the nonprofit sector and in capacity building.
  • Interest in the development of leaders, organizations, and networks in the nonprofit sector.
