Position limited to 20hrs/wk or 960 hours in a fiscal year

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of security and/or parking services for City facilities, including the Library and Performing Arts Center. When assigned to the Arts Center, may be assigned to other front-of-house activities as required.

Job Characteristic: May work a varying schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Work schedules may vary on a season, week-by-week, or day-by day basis.

Examples of Duties

  • Circulate among patrons and facilities, patrol assigned area on foot and/or in a vehicle to enforce standards of decorum and safety as established by management and applicable law.
  • Assist patrons with general inquiries regarding the facility and its operations.
  • Monitor entire Library facility via surveillance video.
  • Operate hand-held radio equipment.
  • Contact local Sheriff's Department when required.
  • Examine credentials of persons seeking entrance into unauthorized areas when required.
  • Monitor parking lot activity and directs patrons to parking locations and/or exits.
  • May assist in other front-of-house activities when assigned to the Arts Center.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Pertinent laws and policies.
  • Effective public relations practices.
  • 832 P.C. regarding arrest, search and seizure techniques or completion of training within six months of employment.
  • 10-100 codes.
  • Organization and record keeping skills.
Ability to:
  • Utilize good and safe judgement when carrying out the duties of this position.
  • Learn rules, regulations and codes applicable to the area assigned.
  • Establish and maintain cooperation with those contacted within the course of work.
  • Enforce safety regulations firmly and impartially in a courteous, diplomatic manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed mainly inside on foot and requires standing or walking for substantial periods of time. An incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch and kneel. Tasks require visual perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability. Incumbent may be required to push, pull, reach, grasp, lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: A valid California driver's license and any education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be one-year previous law and/or safety/security enforcement experience.

A valid California driver's license is required.

ANNUAL VACATION - After 12 months of continuous services, each employee is eligible for a vacation of 12 days. After five years of continuous services and employee is eligible for a vacation of 17 days, with an annual accrual up to a maximum of 22 days.

HOLIDAYS - The City of Cerritos recognizes 11 holidays, plus one floating holiday designated by the employee.

SICK LEAVE - The City provides all paid sick leave. Sick leave with pay for all non-exempt employee shall accrue at the rate of one working day for each full calendar month of the employee's service and any such leave may accrue without limit. At termination, the City will compensate the employee leaving City service for one-half of all accrued sick leave earned.

HEALTH PLANS - All employees and their dependents are provided with a contribution to a comprehensive group health plan. The City will contribute monthly to active employees the cost of PERS Choice family coverage which can be applied towards any PERS insurance plan.

DENTAL and VISION PLAN - All employees and their dependents are covered through Delta Dental and Vision Services Program (VSP).

RETIREMENT - Retirement benefits are under the provisions of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). The City does not participate in Social Security. Your PERS benefit may affect your Social Security benefit. For more information please refer to Social Security publications. All employees are subject to the mandatory 1.45% Medicare contribution.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT - Participation in the City's Educational Reimbursement Program is available to all non-probationary City employees who wish to undertake independent studies to improve their job skills. The City provides $3,000 per year for tuition reimbursement.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY - Employees are provided benefits under a Long-Term Disability Plan after the expiration of an appropriate waiting.

CREDIT UNION - Membership with F&A Federal Credit Union is available to all employees.

LIFE INSURANCE - All employees are covered by a term life insurance policy.

NO-SMOKING POLICY - A no-smoking policy has been adopted in all City facilities to promote a health-based, smokeless workplace as part of the City's commitment to a pollution-free environment.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION - The City offers a voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan for an additional tax-deferred savings option incentive as an additional benefit provided and/or available to employees.
