Job Description
Job Title: Lab Technician/Manager
General Summary of Duties: Collects blood and checks quality of blood from donors. Processes blood orders and reports into NFP & LabCorp computer systems.
Supervision Received: Reports directly to Physicians, Lab Director, and Practice Administrator.
Supervision Exercised: None
Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent walking, sitting, bending and standing required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all the duties assigned.)
1. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products.
2. Performs venipuncture, and capillary punctures on patients. Identifies and labels specimens.
3. Conducts designated laboratory testing.
4. Assists in care of donor prior to, during and after donation.
5. Performs urine dipstick tests.
6. Cleans equipment, instruments, and work area.
7. Inventories supplies and places orders with Purchasing Team.
8. Verifies all lab data is processed in NFP system and LIS system for processing.
9. Assists with scanning of off-site testing results into appropriate patient chart.
10. Maintains and runs controls for efficiency on lab equipment according to Lab Policy and Procedures.
11. Reports Quality Controls and monthly maintenance requirements to Lab Director.
12. Attends meetings as required.
13. Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs.
14. Maintains patient confidentiality.
15. Performs related work as required.
16. Works closely with Lab Director for CLIA and COLA certifications.

Performance Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine blood and urine tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation. Skill in labeling and maintaining all materials for collection. Skill in preparing written reports concerning the results of laboratory tests and inputting data into computer system. Skill in making mathematical computations utilizing standard formulae. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.
Education:
1. Graduation from high school or GED.
2. Graduation from accredited phlebotomy diploma program or medical office training program with phlebotomy training.
Experience: Three years of phlebotomist training in a clinic or hospital setting. One year in a supervisory position preferred.
Certificate/License: Phlebotomy certification required. Medical Lab Technician Certification Required. CPR certification.
Alternative To Minimum Qualifications: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience.
