They are seeking a versatile Head of Legal to join their organization as their 1st legal hire. This role is essential as the company expands and continues to innovate within the healthcare sector. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of legal experience, with a broad background in contracts, regulatory compliance, privacy matters, and overseeing fundraising activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Leadership: Provide strategic legal advice to senior management and various departments, ensuring alignment with long and short term business goals.
- Contract Management: Oversee the drafting, review, negotiation, and management of a wide range of commercial agreements, including SaaS agreements, partnership contracts, licensing agreements, and service agreements.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the company’s operations comply with relevant healthcare regulations and standards, including HIPAA, CCPA, and other federal and state laws.
- Privacy and Data Security: Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with privacy laws and data protection regulations, safeguarding sensitive healthcare information.
- Fundraising Support: Provide legal guidance and support during fundraising rounds, including preparing documentation and liaising with investors and external counsel.
- Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks and provide practical solutions to mitigate them while supporting business objectives.
- Establish Systems & Processes: Establish and develop scalable legal systems and processes to support the company’s growth and operational efficiency as the first legal hire.
- Dispute Resolution: Manage and resolve any legal disputes, including overseeing litigation and liaising with external counsel as necessary.
Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and member in good standing of a state bar.
- Experience: At least 7 years of legal experience, with a focus on contracts, regulatory compliance, privacy, and fundraising support.
- Function Establishment: Prior success building out an in-house legal function with a pre-IPO startup.
- Healthcare & IT Expertise: Experience in the healthcare industry, particularly with B2B Health IT or SaaS platforms.
- Client Service Orientation: Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and deliver high-quality legal services in a fast-paced environment.
- Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams while independently managing projects.
- Risk Management: Expertise in balancing legal risks with business objectives to achieve favorable outcomes.
- Adaptability: Willingness to tackle a broad range of legal issues, including novel and complex challenges.
- Tech-Savvy: A strong understanding of technology and its applications in the healthcare sector.
