Software Development ManagerPortland Webworks (and our public sector brand GovWebworks) is a mission-driven software consulting and professional services agency focused on custom development for the public sector. We build web applications and digital services that make government more accessible, efficient, and user-centered. Our CMS based projects are primarily centered around Drupal and we endeavor to be an active part of the broader Drupal community. Philosophically, we are technology agnostic choosing tools that best meet our clients' needs, with a focus on open source and proven solutions so while we have a bias towards Drupal based on experience, it is not the only tool we consider and use. We seek constant innovation, providing progressive solutions for our clients and continually pushing the boundaries of how we provide those solutions.The Role We are seeking a motivated and versatile Software Development Manager to join our leadership team. In this role, you will oversee a remote team of 12 CMS developers, managing project execution, staff development, and team operations. You will be a key player in delivering high-quality client work, growing our CMS-based product offerings, and cultivating a strong team culture grounded in collaboration, mentorship, and technical excellence. This role reports to the Director of Software Development.Key ResponsibilitiesTeam & People ManagementLead and support a distributed team of CMS developers (in-house and contract)Conduct performance reviews and regular one-on-onesCoach and mentor team members for growth and accountabilityManage hiring, onboarding, and contractor relationshipsProject & Technical LeadershipServe as a technical leader across CMS projects (primarily Drupal)Meet with clients and internal stakeholders to move projects forwardEnsure alignment of technical decisions with long-term product visionSupport client projects with staffing, estimates, and delivery oversightStrategic LeadershipDefine and drive department goals aligned with company strategySupport the evolution of our CMS-based product offeringsEngage with the Drupal community to foster visibility and collaborationMonitor department performance and contribute to company-wide initiativesWhat We're Looking ForExperience leading or managing technical teams, with a strong record of motivating and supporting others5+ years of experience in web development, including CMS platforms (Drupal strongly preferred)Excellent communication and client-facing skillsFamiliarity with professional services/consulting environments (public sector experience a strong plus)A versatile thinker who can balance project needs, technical vision, and team dynamicsA commitment to community engagement and continuous learningBenefitsWe strive for excellence in everything we do.
