The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional Pulmonology & Critical Care physician to join the Division of Pulmonology & Critical Care within the Department of Internal Medicine. Applicants should be eligible for appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level and should have experience in medical education, clinical program development, and scholarship. Applicants must be board-certified, or board eligible in Pulmonology & Critical Care Medicine.

About the Department of Internal Medicine

The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 20 categorical residents per year, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for this program. In September 2021, Dell Med‘s IM program deployed a resident staffed team to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin (SMCA) Hospital. SMCA is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care and comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Center. SMCA also has a Level IV Trama Center.

About the Division

The growing Division of Pulmonology & Critical Care at Dell Medical School aims to provide world-class clinical care. The division has over 20 faculty members with subspecialties in interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, sleep medicine, sarcoidosis, and cough. There is also an interventional pulmonary program. The division works to advance the field of Pulmonology & Critical Care through collaborative research and training of new physician leaders. There is a 3-year pulmonology and critical care fellowship program with a total of nine fellows in training. Housed within the Department of Internal Medicine, the division of Pulmonology & Critical Care works in collaboration with many specialties to ensure the highest quality of care for patients. The division is committed to meeting the expanding clinical needs of the central Texas region and providing the highest quality of patient centered care to our patients.

Job Summary

Development of a strong pulmonology and critical care presence and infrastructure for care delivery, education, and research is essential for meeting the goals of Dell Medical School.

This position will provide direct patient care for patient populations in the specialty of pulmonology and critical care medicine. The candidate will also work with the Dell Med and UT Health Austin leadership on quality improvement projects, development of care models, and in medical education with an aim to meaningfully improve healthcare system processes and delivery of high value care for patients in Travis County. This position will also include working with students, residents, and fellows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct inpatient and outpatient patient care.
  • Collaborating with UT Health Austin, community health systems, and other Dell Med clinical partners to develop new models of care, clinical protocols and deliver outstanding care.
  • Participation in continuous process improvements within the outpatient settings, to include collaboration and program expansion in pulmonary services.
  • Working with students, residents, and fellows in our clinical settings.
Qualifications

  • MD degree with residency training in Internal Medicine and Pulmology & Critical Care fellowship training
  • Able to be appointed at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level.
  • Experience in mentoring students, residents, and fellows.
  • Training and experience in leading quality improvement initiatives.
  • Spanish language fluency is appreciated, but not required.
