Nature of Work

This position is responsible for planning, administering, directing, and coordinating the engineering activities related to the Safe Drinking Water Act in 5 district offices within the Department of Health (DH).


Duties include responsibility for overall coordination and supervision of all Environmental Engineering Division (EED) district office staff performance and activities in the implementation of the drinking water program to assure that not only are program mandates implemented, but to also assure uniformity among districts.


Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting sanitary surveys of public drinking water facilities
  • Responding to and investigation of customer complaints
  • Inspection of new facility construction
  • Assisting water operators in solving treatment problems
  • Responding to emergencies to help water systems restore operations in minimal time
  • Training program staff and water operators
  • Teaching water operator courses, etc.
  • Leading district office staff in approving, recommending, and/or ordering modifications regarding site location, design, material selection, construction, operation, testing, and maintenance of public drinking water systems in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies
  • Assisting in preparation of grant work plans, development of budgets and regular reporting of activities
  • Representing the Department of Health in time of natural disasters, other emergencies, at hearings, meetings, and conferences at the local, state and federal levels.


Minimum Qualifications

Training: Current Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the West Virginia State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

AND

Experience: Eight (8) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a licensed Professional Engineer in a responsible capacity in charge of engineering projects.


Note: The experience must have been acquired after the bachelor’s degree but may have occurred before or after registration as a professional engineer.
