DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs manual work involving apprentice level skills in the remodeling, repair and maintenance of City buildings and facilities and performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this classification are distinguished from the classification of Assistant Building Maintenance Technician in that they have not attained journey level skills in each of the disciplines required. Incumbents report to the Building Maintenance Leadworker. Incumbents perform work which has some variation, and which allows a limited range of choice in application of defined methods or procedures. Incumbents receive instructions when tasks are assigned and have some latitude in selecting work methods. Work is reviewed upon completion. Incumbents are expected to refer to their Supervisor for instruction on tasks that do not fit a clear pattern or require choices outside a defined limited range of methods or procedures.
Examples of Duties

Perform and/or assist in carpentry, plumbing, cement, cabinetry, plumbing, electrical, painting and other similar tasks relating to the remodeling, repair and maintenance of City buildings and facilities. Incumbents complete and maintain work request records of work performed. Incumbents use/operate tools and machinery commonly used in the performance of the work of the various building trades. Incumbents may be required to respond to calls for service after scheduled work hours, and/or on weekends.
Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIREDPossession of a valid California Class C Driver‘s License and a good driving record.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEEducation:
  • Education sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance that is commonly demonstrated by the graduation from High School or its equivalent.
Experience:
  • At least one year of full-time employment as a skilled worker in one or more of the different building maintenance trades (i.e., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and drywall repair);
    or,
  • Completion of a recognized two-year apprenticeship-training program in any one of the different building maintenance trades.

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
  • Standard tools, methods, practices and materials of the several trades involved in the remodeling, maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities;
  • Basic math;
  • Hazards and safety precautions of the work involved in building maintenance;
  • Basic janitorial practices.
Ability to:
  • Make close estimates of material required for building maintenance projects;
  • Work well without close supervision;
  • Complete job tasks in a prescribed period of time;
  • Ask for help when the situation demands it;
  • Understand and communicate both orally and in written form;
  • Maintain records;
  • Operate a motor vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Safely use/operate tools and machinery used in the building trades;
  • Climb ladders, lift equipment and/or materials and perform heavy manual labor as needed;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDSStrength: Heavy lifting and carrying of objects weighing 60 pounds, and occasional lifting, pushing and pulling objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work is often performed out of doors in hot or cold weather above ground level on roofs or attics or below ground in crawl spaces or basements requiring climbing, crawling or working in confined spaces.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Candidates must earn a score of 70.00% or higher to be placed on the eligibility list. Applicants receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year. As determined by the City and at the City‘s expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California driver‘s license and good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
