one of the premier fish and wildlife agency magazines in the country, is looking for a proven art director with the organizational skills and creativity to continue the magazine’s excellence into the future. is the flagship magazine for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, covering stories such as reducing conflicts between people and grizzly bears, game wardens busting poaching rings, fisheries biologists restoring federally endangered pallid sturgeon, research scientists monitoring prairie songbirds, and wildlife managers restoring trophy bighorn sheep in the Missouri Breaks.

The magazine is nationally recognized for its design excellence and features some of the nation’s best outdoor photography, especially in the publication’s popular annual photo issue.

A successful candidate must have a proven track record as a graphic designer, art director, or both for print publications; be passionate about Montana’s outdoor recreation; and understand the role a magazine services for a state wildlife agency. Additionally, the art director of is a key part of the Communication and Education Division staff and will help with additional FWP outreach efforts.

Job Duties:

The art director is responsible for designing, assembling, and producing each issue , the bimonthly Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks magazine, one of the nation’s top state conservation agency magazines. Responsibilities include working with the editor on content planning; assigning photo shoots; soliciting photography and illustrations; producing maps, charts, and other graphics; and otherwise ensuring that the graphic design elements of the magazine support the editorial content.

Duties include producing article layouts using publishing software for review by editor, revising layouts in consultation with editor, verifying all illustration and photography credits, and preparing files for output by printer.

In addition, under no supervision, the art director works directly with agency wide program staff throughout the department on producing a wide range of graphic design products, including FWP annual reports, legislative guides, state parks booklets, boat and water safety brochures, and various posters, flyers, and logos. 

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Incumbent performs work indoors in a typical office environment with light lifting and extensive computer use. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer. May sit for extended periods. Incumbent must often work long and irregular hours under stressful conditions of maintaining strict production schedules, meeting print deadlines, and helping prevent any errors in the magazine that could embarrass FWP or compromise the agency’s relationship with the governor’s office, legislators, other elected officials, or key stakeholder groups.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

The incumbent possesses a unique combination of technical, artistic, communication and marketing skills and expertise, including: technical knowledge of fish, wildlife, and state parks management and fish and wildlife biology; knowledge of Montana geography, outdoor recreation opportunities, and the state park system; thorough knowledge of and experience with magazine or other periodical production processes; thorough knowledge of graphic design techniques and standards; thorough knowledge of Mac computer workstations, computer peripherals, and industry software used to assemble the magazine. This includes, but is not limited to, QuarkXPress, Adobe Creative Suite and FileMaker; ability to supervise and motivate freelance photographers and illustrators; and experience with using computer communication networks.

The position requires the ability to simultaneously track all components of several issues of the magazine, including photography and illustration assignments, article layout, layout revision, issue file preparation, photographer payments, and website updates and maintenance. Incumbent is responsible for FWP’s most visible publication, one that is widely viewed as representing agency positions on every major fish, wildlife, and state park issue in Montana.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field and at least two years of of job-related experience. Experience with publication design, especially magazines, is preferred.
