The Oregon Department of Corrections is looking to fill a vacancy in their Behavioral Health Unit. This exciting employment opportunity works within the Oregon State Penitentiary located in Salem, Oregon. The Behavioral Health Unit is an inpatient mental health unit that provides clients with extensive opportunities to engage in group and individual therapy, as well as medication management. This unit is a program unit that includes several types of available groups, as well as a behavior therapy program. This multidisciplinary team works hard to bring innovative and creative experiences to the clients in their care, and to provide compassionate and individualized treatment.

This position is expected to last eighteen (18) months; and will be filled as a Limited Duration; this position may be extended if additional funding is approved.

This position is represented by the Association of Correctional Employees (AOCE) labor union. This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

The mission of the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) is to promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and reducing the risk of future criminal behavior. DOC provides several levels of mental health care along with individualized mental health treatment. Behavioral health services are targeted to adults in custody (AIC) with severe or persistent mental illness. Short-term services are available to AICs who are not mentally ill, but who show high suicide potential, or who are experiencing other emotional distress.

is a multi-custody prison and is the only maximum-security prison.

The Behavioral Health Unit at OSP is one of three Mental Health Special Housing units at the facility. It is an in-patient mental health unit for clients who have a serious mental illness and who have had behavioral problems in lower levels of care. It’s two partnering Mental Health Special Housing units are the Mental Health Infirmary, a crisis unit, and Intermediate Care Housing, ODOC’s second highest level of care. OSP is also home to a Day Treatment Unit and provides general out-patient services to identified clients. The penitentiary also has a full-service infirmary. OSP is proud of its commitment to provide quality care to some of the highest needs clients in the state, as well as its commitment to creating a culture of health and wellness for those clients and the staff who work with them.

What does this job do?

This position identifies, according to specific criteria, all mentally ill and developmental disabled (DD) AICs within the institution, coordinate regular contact with AICs to conduct mental status examinations, suicide assessments, develop treatment interventions, behavior plans and risk management plans and provide crisis services.

The position is responsible for:

  • Initial identification/Assessments

  • Crisis Intervention

  • Case Management

  • Treatment Services

  • Records Management

  • Release Planning

  • Consultation and Training

  • Group Facilitation

These positions:

  • Perform work inside an adult prison

  • Have contact with adults in custody during treatment/consultation, at times out of visual range of security staff

  • Are exposed to adults in custody that may become physically and/or verbally abusive

  • Require vigilance and awareness

Additional applicable incentives:

  • 4.75% differential for licensed QMHPs

  • 5% for bilingual QMHPs

  • 5% for lead worker QMHPs

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing or occupational therapy AND licensed by the State of Oregon AND three years of progressively responsible experience related to the series concept.

OR

  • A Master’s degree in psychology; social work; recreational, art, or music therapy; or behavioral health science AND two years of progressively responsible experience related to the series concept.

Note: Some positions may require qualification as a QMHP (Qualified Mental Health Professional).

Preferred

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience (1,920 hours), which may include applicable internships, of the experience which demonstrates the competencies noted in the Qualifications and Required Skills sections.
