Summary
The Recreational Therapist is administratively and clinically responsible for providing individual- and group therapy for adult
patients. Must exhibit in-depth knowledge in clinical assessment and expressive therapy group facilitation for individual patient
needs.
Qualifications
Education/Qualification
- Bachelors or Master‘s Degree in Expressive Therapy, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy or other mental health field.
Current board certification or registration for Music Therapy (MT-BC), Art Therapy (ATR), Dance/Movement Therapy (R-DMT),
- Recreational Therapist (RT) State licensure required, only if applicable in the District of Columbia. Candidates must have required licensure for their respective role.
- One year of professional experience in any of the RecreationalTherapy modalities, preferable in an inpatient psychiatric
setting.
- Must be able to assist in the physical restraint of disturbed patients utilizing Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) model.
Skills
Demonstrated ability to work with people who have a chronic mental illness, psychosis, severe depression, and/or substance
misuse. Knowledge of the principles and practices of mental health counseling and group therapy.
Knowledge of abnormal psychology and human development across the lifespan, and its impact on physical, emotional,
cognitive, personality, and behavioral development.
Ability to assess and evaluate psychosocial data to compile and complete assessments, treatment planning, and appropriate
group facilitation.
Demonstrated ability to develop a Group Therapy schedule for an inpatient behavioral health unit that promotes mental
health wellness and healing.
Demonstrated ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress and to remain calm when
under stress or in emergency situations.
Ability to perform individual, family, group, and crisis intervention techniques for patients.
