About the role

The Steele Haughton Unit (SHU) offers specialist mental health treatment and care for clients over the age of 65. In this unit they have 10 short-term acute mental health inpatient beds and 20 residential beds.

The Steele Haughton Unit offers continuing professional development in-house with scheduled, regular sessions and individual/group sessions provided as needed with acute and residential educators. All staff are supported by a strong team culture, and staff new to the Mental Health field are provided with training and support to further develop skills.

As part of wider mental health services, SHU implements Safewards principles (a model designed to improve safety of everyone in the environment by reducing conflict and flashpoints) and commence recovery-oriented practice.

The Steele Haughton Unit provides opportunities for staff to grow professionally by being part of working groups/champions of initiatives. 

You will be able to work collaboratively and consultatively as part of a multidisciplinary team, have demonstrated leadership ability and have a clear understanding of the managerial responsibilities of an Associate Nurse Unit Manager. Provide clinical treatments to clients within the inpatient mental health services and their carers that are evidence based and/or best practice, family inclusive to enhance the patient’s recovery from serious mental disorder.

Key Responsibilities

The position will be responsible for practicing within the nationally accepted standards. Undertakes bio psycho social assessments of patients, which lead to the development of treatment plans and includes supervision of other staff. Evaluate and document the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment delivered to patients and families.

Skills and experience

Professional qualifications in Nursing and a current Registration in accordance with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). At least 3 years working in a ward. Relevant experience in, and ongoing commitment to, the delivery of evidence-based and best practice, family inclusive treatments for patients with a serious mental disorder; demonstrated proficiency in the application of knowledge in current evidence-based treatment practices and approaches Preferably possess or be working towards completion of a managerial qualification.

This position is paid in accordance with the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2020 - 2024. The classification is Associated Nurse Unit Manager (YW11 – YW12) which ranges from $ - $ per hour.
