Atlanta, United States Atlanta Speech School Full time

Atlanta Speech School

Speech-Language Pathologist/Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing – Katherine Hamm Center

Start Date: August 2024

The Atlanta Speech School provides an unmatched opportunity to learn from both peers and experts in the field, and to contribute to the School’s growing body of knowledge. Beyond seeking proficiency, we work to construct a Deep Reading Brain for each child at the School, and, through our Rollins Center for Language & Literacy, every child beyond the school. Deep reading requires learning to make connections between what we read to what we think, feel, and do. Through deep reading, children develop empathy, hone critical thinking, and go on to make the greatest possible difference in the lives of others.

· We believe in connection over compliance. Rather than silencing children, we teach them to listen - and to think, to question, and to solve.

· Our staff works together to know and serve each child from within an intentional learning ecosystem that is as joyful as it is rigorous.

· Our practices are grounded in structured literacy and built on the sciences of healthy brain development, language acquisition, and the construction of the Deep Reading Brain. This work is intentionally centered around critical thinking, empathy, problem solving and the development of executive functions.

We are committed to providing a community through which all our students, families, and staff show up safely as themselves and for each other. As stewards of this environment, it is our responsibility to ensure safety extends to every person, inclusive of all races /ethnicities, religions, genders, family structures, sexual orientations, and any other aspect of their identity.

The School has never turned away a child in need of services based on their family’s financial circumstances.

Program Information:

The Katherine Hamm Center is a program for individuals from birth through 99 who are deaf/hard of hearing and on the path to literacy through listening and spoken language. Children enrolled in the Katherine Hamm Center have access to all sounds of speech through listening technology such as hearing aids or cochlear implants. The Katherine Hamm Center serves children and their families through its preschool program (14 months-PreK) --watch a short video about the Hamm Center Preschool here—and through Auditory-Verbal Therapy (children of all ages). The Katherine Hamm Center partners with adults who are post-lingually deafened through Aural Rehabilitation. Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Aural Rehabilitation are offered both in person and virtually.

Position Summary:

The Katherine Hamm Center has an opening for a full-time preschool teacher (or Speech-Language Pathologist) for the 2024-2025 school year. The teacher (or Speech-Language Pathologist) provides a morning of language-rich experiences for children who are deaf/hard of hearing and children of staff members who have not been diagnosed with a hearing loss. Auditory-Verbal principles are utilized to develop listening and spoken language. Teaching takes place in a school setting with small groups (up to 7). The teacher (or Speech-Language Pathologist) is responsible for evaluating, identifying appropriate goals, providing experiences to meet those goals, and reporting progress to each child’s team. The teacher (Speech-Language Pathologists) will collaborate with a team of professionals (parents, teachers, OTs, SLPs, Preschool Counselors, Director, Curriculum Specialist, Educational Audiologists, Managing Audiologist, and outside therapists) to create the optimal learning experience for each child.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement lessons for preschool-aged children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their hearing peers with particular emphasis on speech, language, auditory, and literacy development
  • Lead parent conferences at least three times a year
  • Maintain an effective system for communicating with parents, colleagues, and outside personnel regarding children’s development
  • Work collaboratively with each child’s team to ensure exemplary services are provided for each child

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or commensurate experience in Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Communication Disorders, or Speech-Language Pathology
  • Georgia certification or eligible for certification
  • Strong understanding of Auditory-Verbal principles
  • Knowledge of cochlear implants, hearing aids, and assistive listening devices
  • LSLS Certification preferred
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development is required

Among the many programs at the Atlanta Speech School, children and adults with hearing loss and language processing difficulties are served. Therefore, the clarity and accuracy of an applicant’s speech and language may be part of the hiring decision as they relate to performing the essential functions of the position.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience.

Benefits:

This 190-day, 30 hour/week school position offers a generous benefit package including health/dental/life/vision and long-term disability insurance; the School subsidizes health insurance premiums of staff and families. Other benefits include Flexible Spending Account; 403(b) Plan; cost reduction of some Atlanta Speech School services; complimentary meals during working hours; and accrued sick leave.

To Apply:

Please submit the following documents to ensure that your information is considered: cover letter, resume, and written submission describing how your particular skills, talents, and/or expertise could be beneficial to the Hamm Center (please limit to 500 words).
