Your New Role – Rest Area Technician

This position performs janitorial, custodial, groundskeeping, maintenance, and security tasks to provide clean and safe restrooms, buildings, roadways, and grounds for rest area visitors. Weatherby Rest Area is on I-84, milepost 335.9 north of Huntington. The Rest Area Technician is a fill-in position and is not scheduled to work regular hours but is available to work as needed; rest areas are staffed every day of the year, and fill-in employees are frequently scheduled to work weekends and holidays.

The individual in this position must perform position duties in a manner that promotes customer service and harmonious working relationships, including treating all persons courteously and respectfully; actively engaging in and promoting a positive work environment; developing good working relationships with agency personnel and with appropriate external partners; identify and resolve problems in a constructive manner; demonstrate openness of constructive feedback and suggestions; and contribute to a positive, respectful, and productive work atmosphere creating a positive, productive environment focused on results.

Minimum Qualifications Required: At least six months experience in facility maintenance, construction trades, landscaping, or similar work AND six months experience in customer service providing information and assistance to the public.

The following are skills that we have identified as key to the success in this Rest Area Technician role at TIC. Preference may be given to applicants who possess the following.

  • Skill in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, janitorial, and groundskeeping. 
  • Working knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, asphalting, painting, and other construction knowledge or skills.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with the public, law enforcement, and agency officials.
  • Skill in reading, understanding, and applying specifications found in manuals, guidelines, and plans.
  • Excellent time management skills including the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Working Conditions:

  • Interacts frequently with the public. Often works alone.
  • Works various shifts including weekends, holidays, evenings, and occasional long hours on short notice.
  • May be exposed to environmental and chemical hazards, allergens, and odors.
  • Cleans up and disposes of human-generated and animal waste.
  • May be exposed to hostile and offensive language and actions from the public.
  • Works in, on and around buildings, facilities, and grounds, inside and outside in all weather conditions; uses vision and hearing, manual dexterity, communication, and motor skills to perform the duties of the position, including emergency response situations; traverses up and down inclines and stairs, over rough, uneven and slippery terrain or paved surfaces; maneuvers objects weighing up to 50 pounds; uses ladders, reaches above shoulder level, and works on hands and knees; bends, stoops, crouches, kneels, climbs, twists, pushes and pulls in regular performance of duties.
