Summary of Duties:

The Director of the Writing Program is responsible for the over-arching vision, mission, and administration of the Washington State University (WSU) – Writing Program and its subsidiary programs and initiatives (e.g., the WSU Writing Center, Writing Assessment Program, Graduate Writing Center, the Writing in the Disciplines-Writing Across the Curriculum Initiative, and the Professional Editing Service Center). The responsibilities include overseeing the entire unit's operations across all university sites, fiscal and personnel resources, and other related administrative functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment.
  • Ph.D, Ed.D, or other terminal degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies or other discipline relevant to the position.
  • At least two years of experience in the administration of a writing program or related relevant administrative activity.
  • At least two years of experience in faculty development activities related to writing.
  • Documented experience in writing assessment and/or program assessment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and experience successfully advocating for the values of equity and justice.
  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Expertise in effective practices of composition pedagogy and learning.
  • Experience with writing center theory and practices.
  • Experience in establishing and assessing learning outcomes.
  • Experience in curriculum development relevant to Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing in the Disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in innovative instructional technologies.
  • Expertise in effective practices of writing program administration.
  • Experience with first-generation undergraduate students, students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education, bilingual or Gen 1.5 students, and experience with the oral and written needs of international students learning English as a foreign language.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
