The Chief Nurse is responsible for 24 x 7 oversight and operations for sustainable quality outcomes and metrics within the following areas: Operating Room, PACU, Pre-Op/Same Day Surgery, Clinical Procedures Center, Cath/EP Lab & other assigned clinical areas. Responsible for a full range of duties, removing barriers, collaboration, serving as the expert overseeing the operations & demonstrating mastery in clinical knowledge & leading the Nursing Team. The incumbent reports directly to the Deputy Associate Director of Patient Care/Nursing Services.

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as the expert overseeing the operations & demonstrating mastery in clinical knowledge & leading the Nursing Team.
  • Demonstrates sound nursing and administrative judgment in decision-making and leadership with interdisciplinary groups involved in the planning, designing, implementing, and improving patient care services and health care delivery systems.
  • Evaluates program/service line outcomes and implements solutions that minimize barriers and ensures that established operational metrics are met.
  • Works collaboratively to establish processes to improve care delivery, access to veterans, system redesign, performance & quality outcomes.
  • Creates opportunities to share knowledge/expertise within and across own and/other services.
  • Implement standards of professional practice and creates a culture and environment that utilizes evidence-based practice as the pathway to improved outcomes.
  • Participates in recruitment and assures the successful transition of new leaders into their roles.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) contract, and abides by the contract, laws, regulations, and Veterans Affairs (VA) Directives.
  • Responsible for compliance with all safety, regulatory and accrediting body requirements for general nursing section related issues.
  • Routinely collaborates with the Deputy ADPCS to formulate long and short-term goals for the service and aligns these goals with the goals of the healthcare system.
  • Develops action plans to accomplish service line goals with available resources within established timelines.
  • Supports/actively participates in initiatives such as High Reliability Organization (HRO), Patient Centered Care, Just Culture, & I CARE.
  • Manages human, material, & financial resources effectively to improve overall patient outcomes for patients with Perioperative Services, Nursing Service and the healthcare system.
  • Participates with executive leaders, management, and clinical members in upholding the hospital mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Promotes effective communication, transparent culture of integrity & accountability.
  • Provides direct supervision, orientation & ongoing development of supervisors setting clear/measurable goals.
  • Ensures adequate utilization of resources to ensure safe patient care to meet operational requirements.
