The Acute Pain Service Expansion Program (APSEP) Registered Nurse Acute and Chronic Pain Care Coordinator is a member of the Anesthesia Service working under direction of the Acute Pain Service (APS) Section Chief.

The RN collaborates with other members of the APS team to care for patients with acute and acute-on-chronic pain conditions.

The RN provides direct and indirect nursing care and may have administrative duties to include data tracking and managing patient lists.

The RN is comfortable in complex patient situations and has knowledge of acute and chronic pain in surgical nonsurgical pain states.


The APSEP RN will have a strong clinical knowledge of perioperative pain management, care of post-surgical patients, and coordination of care.

The RN will collaborate with the team to assess, advocate, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor and evaluate health care options and services to meet individual patients needs.

The RN will function independently under the medical direction of the APS Section Chief. Familiarity and ability to work throughout the operative setting. The RN prior to surgery will perform patient assessment, education and will help explore options for post-operative pain control.

The RN post-surgery will evaluate pain, follow the patient during hospitalization or as an outpatient, adjust pain management, reinforce education on narcotics use and tapering, and follow up after discharge as needed.
