The Department of Energy's (DOE) Off ice of Nuclear Energy - is looking for a dynamic, innovative, seasoned executive to lead and manage national program that supports the research and development of innovative reactor technologies that may offer improved safety, functionality and affordability, and builds upon existing nuclear technology and operating experience.

As the Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Fuel Cycle you will:
  • Assists in a line capacity the direction of Nuclear Fuel Cycle organizational activities, frames strategic plans based on broad organizational assessments and evaluations of long-term organizational objectives.
  • Determine the financial and personnel resources needed to achieve mission objectives and support mission operations; identifies the need for major organizational improvements and develops the requisite plans and directs implementing actions.
  • Conduct research, development, and demonstration to enhance nuclear fuel supply chain capabilities through partnerships with industry, academia, international partners and directed activities at multiple national laboratories. Supports the development of a diverse, secure, and market-based domestic nuclear fuel supply chain that supports both current and future nuclear technologies.
  • Establish and maintain research and testing infrastructure needed to accomplish mission objectives.
  • Support the research and development of advanced nuclear fuels as a major objective for both existing light water reactors (LWR) and the entire spectrum of advanced nuclear energy systems.
  • Lead research and development of high-priority accident tolerant fuel (ATF) and clad concepts, as well as the research and development for next-generation fuels with enhanced proliferation resistance, resource utilization, safety, and performance. Provide the critical capability needed to analyze complex fuel cycle system options, assess overall performance under various scenarios, and improve understanding of the interdependencies between various subsystems and associated technologies.
  • Conduct research and develop advanced material recovery and advanced waste form technologies that improve current fuel cycle performance with minimal processing, waste generation, and potential for material diversion. Integrates and coordinates advanced special nuclear material management and safeguards technologies, including the assessment of vulnerabilities and security of fuel cycle systems to minimize proliferation and terrorism risk of advance material recovery technologies.

    • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FOR THIS VACANCY: This is a career position in the SES. Unless the selectee is already a member of the SES with career status or has successfully completed an SES Candidate Development Program certified by OPM, executive qualifications must be approved by OPM before the appointment can be effected. If you are selected, you will be responsible for working with a DOE Executive Consultant to finalize your ECQ narrative for OPM submission.

      CITIZENSHIP: You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

      HOMELAND SECURITY PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE (HSPD-12): A selectee's appointment is contingent upon compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12) governing personal identity.

      PUBLIC FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE REPORT (OGE 278): If you are selected for this position, will be required to file this report prior to entry on duty in accordance with the Ethics of Government Act of 1978.

      PROBATIONARY PERIOD: An individual's initial SES career appointment becomes final only after the individual successfully completes a one-year probationary period.

      SECURITY CLEARANCE: You must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

      DRUG TESTING: As a condition of appointment to this position, you will be subject to pre-employment/pre-appointment testing for illegal drug use under the U.S. Department of Energy Employee Drug Plan.       Qualifications

      The application process used to recruit for this position is the RESUME BASED method.       5: Building Coalitions: Ability to build coalitions internally and with other Federal agencies, State and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations to achieve common goals.

      MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (MTQs): As part of your application package, a supplemental narrative must be uploaded addressing each MTQ listed below. No more than one (1) page per MTQ is allowed; additional informational information will not be considered. MTQs must provide specific examples that address relevant experience and accomplishments. Applicants must reflect superior technical qualifications demonstrated through leadership and management in the following MTQs. Failure to submit a narrative statement addressing each of the MTQs may cause your application to be deemed incomplete and not be considered.

      MTQ 1: Describe your working knowledge of the commercial nuclear fuel cycle and commercial nuclear supply chain issues facing the US and allied countries.

      MTQ 2: Describe your executive level experience with current domestic and international political and financial issues related to nuclear fuel supply.

      MTQ 3: Demonstrate your ability to manage a complex nuclear or another high hazard program. Specifically, the ability to plan and execute the scope, cost, and schedule of such programs in a highly regulated, transparent and socially accountable environment.
